Made up my mind that I want my semi to be in .308, but now its in what form. Im leaning towards a G3 clone but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Thanks

The PTR is the way to go if you want G3. Nice advantage to that is the magazines are available for like 3 bucks each :)

I went with the M1A, and a SAGE stock, very very happy I did. My second choice would be a DSA made FAL, with the Folding PARA-trooper stock. I still want one of those for the collection.

Ive heard very nice things about the PTR, the M1A1 are sick as well.

Does this mean I need to get both.......

Simple truth is yes, eventually you will need a G3, a FAL, and an M14 of some type (M1A or whatever). :)

But in the meantime, if money is tight, I still think the PTR/G3 is the best "bang for the buck" in the .308 battle rifles.

I have both an FNAR and POF 308 and like both very much. I have a Millett DMS on the FNAR and a Bushnell red dot on the POF. I am not likeing the red dot and thinking of either another Millett or an aimpoint for it.

removing the spent primer from a military .308 cartridge

can anyone tell me if there is a tool or method for removing a primer from a military .308 cartridge for reloading. The traditional sizing die and de-capping die has the pin in the center and the flash holes on the military round are to the left and right of center. Please help I have 200 military rounds that I want to reload.

It is possible, there are special tools for reloading Berdan primed brass.

Truth is it's almost more trouble than it's worth though.

The anvil is part of the brass itself with Berdan, where Boxer primed (reloadable) has the anvil as part of the primer.

Not only do you have to remove the Berdan primer but you have to modify the brass to remove this anvil and prepare the case for a Boxer primer to fit.

If you really want to do it you can track down the tools etc but it's seriously WAY too much work.

Here are some photos and stuff on another board if you want to see it done.

I have a M1A and my brother has a DSA FAL , both are great semi-auto .308s, had a cetme once , cant recommend one of those

The PTR is a nice rifle, if you reload or plan to it can be a bit rough on brass even with a port buffer.

If you've never handled a G3 type rifle, I suggest you find one you can shoot (or at least shoulder and point) before you decide on it.

Many say the G3 has the single worst ergonomics of any rifle in human history, yet others say they fit like a glove. The point is that they're either a love'em or hate'em kind of rifle.

For me, I prefer an AR10 to all of them.

They seem to fit me and thats unusual cause I'm a tall drink of water. Friend of mine has a POF .308 but its a touch out of my price range.

I have a STG58 FAL. Very nice shooter, very accurate and easy on the brass. I had to play with the gas setting a little. Fun Gun! I have a 308 bolt rifle as well and I like it allot.

.308

Number one choice would be the M1A, but I'd throw the AR-10 on the list too. I shoot the Armalite and like what it has to offer.

If money's not an issue, the M1A is very, very, very nice. The FAL is also, but not quite as accurate.

If money is slightly tight, I'd look at the DPMS .308 AR-10 style rifle.

I owned a PTR-91 and sold it. I'm a big guy with big hands and the ergos were still awful, like it was designed for Paul Bunyan or something. It also requires an extremely strong left arm to open the bolt if you let it slam forward (as you should!) and fully lock. It throws brass about 40-50 feet and crimps the case mouth in the process, so any empties you find are probably not reloadable. And recoil was stout for a .308, though it varied noticeably depending how clean and oiled the gun was.

The G3 design is reliable and fairly accurate, but IMHO not the best of the .308 options. It also sells for about twice what it should, since it's no harder to build than an AK-47, and probably even easier. If you do the G3 route, the PTR-91 is probably the best quality at any price, and definitely the best value.

What prices are we looking at for a PTR91? If I had to guess, I'd say the FAL is the best .308 rifle out there.

I am always a bit surprised that a flood of responses comes before there is anyword of what the rifle will be used for, what your expectatons for it are etc. IMHO as long as you go with a well built exemplar you will get a good rifle with any of them, Now which edges the others depends on the intended use and expectations imo.

Some folks like the FAL. I think it was the BETA tester for the G3, which outshines it in nearly every measurable way.

I'm very happy with my PTR 91. I think my overall contentment is due in large part to the plethora of accessories available for it at reasonable prices. The 22 lr kit has more than paid for itself in joy when out knocking about in the bush. I'm not as happy with the blue plastic ammo setup, however. The different stocks, trigger housing/grips available make it a neat rifle to collect for. The ease in cleanup is a welcome end to a day of shooting.

It is accurate, very dependable, and pleasant to shoot. I'd buy another.

FAL vs. HK91

61. The question of which is better frequently comes up. IMO both are good designs and either will do what most shooters want to do with a military-style 7.62 rifle. I own both and like them both but there are some differences. To me the FAL feels sleeker and faster handling but this is subjective. The 91 seems sturdier but again this could just be my perception. The 91 is hard on cases, battering them during ejection. Also, for some reason the 91 is horrendously loud with a real sharp report. The FAL is a tad longer and to me the grip angle is not as natural as that on the 91. The bottom line is that all of the differences are relatively minor and I could happily live with either if limited to one. If I had to choose, I would likely pick the FAL but it would be very close. I have no experience with any of the various “clones” of these rifles as mine are genuine FN and HK products so I cannot comment on their quality.

My first 308 was a Winchester model 100 about 40 yrs ago. Still accurate although I never shot it much. M1a is my pick now and keep it with me as a "truck gun"(encased). Still able to shoot 4" groups at 200 yds with it--fine rifle. 36, there is a couple of videos on how to reload Berdans over at ?? will try to chase them down and get back. Not as complicated as it seems and I am going to be reloading some myself. Hate to toss good brass, wc
