My first experience with the M1 Garand was in navy boot. Spent alot of time holding that sucker straight out in front at full arms length and it was a heavy begger.
As I was into guns before I joined it was great to get my hands on a military rifle and after boot was over I saved my money and bought one. I killed my very first deer with that rifle. Then I finally got to qualify with a rifle and was issued an M-14 and I fell in love. It was the product improved M1 Garand in .308 and I just had to have one.
I could never afford one up until several years ago and many years had went by drooling over every gun mag pic or website that showed pics or had any info on them. When I was able to afford one I learned about the PTR-91 and thought it was a great deal at around $850 and bought it. That rifle is not ergonomically friendly and I even got mild case of tennis elbow cycling the charging handle as much as I did. I sold it and bought what I had really wanted, a Springfield Armory M1A.
Now the design may not be the most efficient or simplistic available, but it is robust, reliable and accurate. It is a smooth functioning rifle, ergonomically friendly, it's easy to operate, aesthetically pleasing and it harkens back to a time when more of a human touch went into it's creation.
