Reloading question: Can I take once fired .308 brass and run through a 7mm-08 die set and end up with a shootable 7mm-08 cartridge? Same question for a 30-06 run through a 25-06 die set? Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give. Regards,

Welcome to The High Road!

To answer your question, you can. But, depending on your rifle, you may have to ream the necks of the reformed cases due to the thickening when sizing down.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the information! I have looked at the specs (OL, shoulder angle, etc.) for the cartridges and there appears to be little difference other than the length of the actual shoulder angle from the parent to the offspring cartridge which can be explained by the thickening of the brass in the neck of the offspring cartridge, I guess. Regards,

Those cartridges are nothing more than their parent necked down. You may have to ream or turn the necks and you'll probably have to trim the case because it will grow a bit as well during the necking operation. The datum line is the same, headspace the same, shoulder angle the same. The only difference is the diameter of the neck.

Works with the 25/06-30/06... lots of them with out any problems. Some of the best brass I've ever owned was LC 68 Match necked to 25/06....

Can't speak for the 308/7-08.

I've just gotta ask this question. Why bother when you can buy the correct brass with the actual caliber head stamp? Seems to me to be alotta trouble unless a guy just like to fiddle around. No insult just askin.

In many cases good brass isn't available in the other calibers, only the parent, or availability is very limited. Once-fired and mil-surp is really cheap though.

I shoot at a range where I pick up lots of .308 and .30/06
Most of my brass for my 7mm08 is from .308. All of my .260Rem is from .243, and all my .358wcf is from .308.

I've not ever tried to make .25/06 from .30/06, but I have made .257Roberts from 8x57Mauser.
Typically, neck turning isn't necessary, but trimming to uniform lenght is.
BTW; I also form .338/06 from .30/06 and .375Ruger from .300WinMag. The latter are a bit "funny" looking with a constriction forward of the belt, but with 90%+ loads seal and load/shoot normally.
There isn't much really new under the sun!

30-06 -> 270 works fine
8x57 -> 7x57 -> 257 Roberts works fine
308 -> 260 works 90% of the time, and 10% gets bullet pinch:(
30 carbine -> 19 Badger, a real mess unless commercial brass and better form dies than I made
308 -> 243 works so bad, my pic of the primer falling out was downloaded 20,000 times in the last 10 years.

You can definately make 7/08 from 308 and 25/06 from 30/06, that's what the original wildcatters that invented those cartridges started with. And if you have a supply of quality, cheap brass (especially 308 military) that is readily available, it makes pretty good sense to me.

I've made a lot of cases from other cases, mostly because I had a lot of one type, needed another type and had lots of time on my hands.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Yugo M48 Mauser 8X57mm and needed brass. I had a LOT of 30/06 brass (10k+) so I spent a few days forming some 8mms from 06s. It can get a little tedious, but I enjoy the process of reloading and tinkering.

No matter what you form or what you for it from, please just to be safe, always check the finished case length and inside/outside neck diameter.
