Since I can never leave anything well enough alone, I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to try some of the Berger 200.20X in my 308, figured I'd share the data so far.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, Jesus, Buddah, Elon Musk, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

The rifle is a PTG trued 700 SA with a Kreiger M24 1-11.25" Twist 5R barrel chambered and fitted by one "Skeet" Lee Gardner. The barrel was chambered with a 308 GAP reamer and was finished at 24". (In case anybody was wondering.)

Now... where was I ... oh yeah, the load data:

Brass: Hornady 308 Match
Primer: WLRP
Powder: Varget
COAL: 3.056"
Jump to lands: ~.015

I started at 100 yards with 39 grains of powder to get on paper and then began an increase of 0.2 grains starting at 39.5. The range to target for the 20 shot ladder was 325 yards, you'll note a dramatic shift in the windage after the first 10 rounds as I was worried about my 39 grain group getting in the mix of my ladder so I corrected left by a minute and a half.

Here's the velocity chart from my Magneto Speed. Shot number 20 did not clock so it does not appear on the chart.

Velocity Graph.JPG

Charge - Velocity (FPS) - Shot number
39.5 2344 1
39.7 2321 2
39.9 2353 3
40.1 2382 4
40.3 2395 5
40.5 2403 6
40.7 2417 7
40.9 2454 8
41.1 2448 9
41.3 2459 10
41.5 2502 11
41.7 2486 12
41.9 2509 13
42.1 2536 14
42.3 2557 15
42.5 2551 16
42.7 2555 17
42.9 2573 18
43.1 2614 19
43.3 error 20

I'm going to re-shoot the flat spots on the chart to see if they group better. Shots 15-17 should have been right on top of each other based on velocity, I'll have to shoot for groups tomorrow.

The minimum twist is 11 but Berger recommends 10 twist, the test had nothing to do with concerns about stability. As for the powder selection, I put Varget in everything. The only slower powders I have on hand are AA-4350, Big Game, an H-100V. Some folks over at Accurate Shooter are running heavier charges than me.
