ive read that the short lived 32 magnum wheelguns from Smith and Wesson could also fire 32 acp cases in a pinch in an emergency without moon clips. Is it safe or possible for any other 32 magnum revolver to do so?

I have heard from many that it works just fine. My friend carries a S&W .32 Mag. and said he bought a box of acp's by mistake but shot them through his gun with no problem.

I haven't tried this yet out of my Taurus 731 but will have to give it a go once.

Using a rimmless case in any firearm made for a rimmed case with no moon clip(assuming you could find any) means you have no headspace. There's nearly 400 thou difference in case length and 17 thou difference in the case head diameter.

I was thinking it was .32 Long you could shoot .32 ACP in, not .32 Mag, but my memory could be failing me.

32ACP has a teensy little rim - enough for headspace, BUT they might get stuck under the ejector star on a DA gun. NOT for defense use but OK for range plinking as long as you understand the issue and either gently use the ejector or poke rounds out one at a time with a pencil or similar.

On an SA, no problem.

Jim got it right - the .32 acp is a semi-rimmed cartridge which will headspace off the rim allowing it to be fired in either the .32 S&W long chamber or the .32 H&R mag.

Not as a usual fodder, but in a pinch it works and Jim also mentions the possible downfall of the ejector passing the rim of the acp.

You can shoot 32ACP in the 32S&W, 32S&WLong, 32H&RMagnum and the new 327Federal.

The 32 is the only "ACP" series critter with any rim at all.

However, a word of caution. I would be very Leary of firing the .32 acp in the diminutive .32 S&W break top revolvers. It can be done and the .32 acp is certainly more powerful than the .32 S&W, but pressure is greater than those little revolvers were designed to handle.

The Old Fuff, being way over the hill sometimes gets some strange ideas. One of them is to use the correct ammunition for whatever a handgun is chambered in. Oh I know! That takes all the fun out of experimenting an' fooling around, and besides if one can get it into the chamber it should be O.K....

Right? I mean why wouldn't it be..... :uhoh:

:)

OF, mostly I agree but in this case...

OK, let's say we have a newbie shooter with a 327 SP101. Starting them out on one box of 32ACP with more or less zero recoil doesn't seem like a bad idea. Then work them up the scale through 32H&RMag, then eventually 327s. They get comfortable with trigger control and the gun itself before the recoil starts to get scary :).

The other reason to know these oddball cross-chamberings is for instances where you just don't have anything else available. This may not be "SHTF", it could be as simple as flying into another state with your 327 carry gun, and some TSA weenie steals the ammo out of your baggage. So you go to a gunshop, you're in a hurry, they don't have 327, they don't even have 32Mag, but they have 32ACP. It's that or go unarmed...?

I think people need to know what their options are in a pinch.

its just that in my area gun shops and ammo stores, like wally world, i have never seen a box of 32 SW, 32 SW Long, or 32 magnum. I have been able to find quite a few boxes of 32acp at wally world.
At 14/20 for 32 long, at sportsmansguide, and about 19/50 32acp there, makes sense to investigate.

Im thinking a 32 mag revovler for fun, but any idea how 32acp would perform in a heritage 32 mag?

Well the .32 S&W is about the same as .32ACP, and correctly fits the chamber, as does the .32 S&W Long, and of course the .32 H&R Magnum. In an emergency if none of these were available one could go to .32 ACP, but if one of them had an undersized rim you could be in serious trouble. The .32 ACP also has a thinner rim then the revolver cartridges (.045" vs. .055") which creates a .010" headspace issue. The SP101's firing pin is not designed to reach out and touch.

I think if I was depending on a .327 Magnum (or for that matter any other handgun) a spare box of ammunition wouldn't be too far from hand.
