338 Federal

My Sako 85 in 338 federal is fast becoming my favorite deer rifle. Inside 300 it is great for anything I am going to shoot here on the east coast. Hopefully it will be around for a while if not we'll never run out of .308 brass

I bought a Ruger M77R Hawkeye All Weather chambered in .338 Federal for my son. I enjoy the idea of having something a little different than everyone else, and he likes it just fine. It is lightweight, decently accurate and not too bad, recoil wise off the bench. It does pack a punch, particularly under 200 yards, and probably would be fine out to 300 yards or so on deer. It probably is on its way to obsolescence, since Federal recently announced that it was discontinuing the factory head stamped brass for reloaders. They will probably continue to offer factory ammunition for a while. The AR crowd may very well embrace it, as I can't imagine a better hog rifle than an AR-10 chambered for .338 Federal shooting a 200 gr bullet at 2500 fps. As long as .338 bullets and .308 Win brass are offered, we will be able to load for it.

i've been thinking of a 338 fed for some time now. in my tc encore it will probably be a 23" heavy mgm barrel, and i'll make up either 200 or 225gr hornady sst bullets.

people said it will never happen, but with 308 cases and .338 bullets it will and does!!!
