.357 powder.

2400 is my powder for full power loads. W231 and HBWC bullets are my target load, but they’re only half a step ahead of 2400 in accuracy with their respective loads. Contrary to many here I’ve had good luck with CFE Pistol for mid range 125 grain cast loads and it equals W231 from my revolver for HBWC accuracy. I’m getting ready to try either Enforcer or AA#9 as I’m nearly out of 2400 and none in sight. I forgot HS6. It shoots lighter jacketed bullets well but I haven’t had much luck with cast or heavier jacketed. I reserve it for 9mm heavy bullet target loads now anyway.

I really like IMR 4227. It’s not the world champ in the speed division, but still a workhorse. Case fill virtually eliminates powder position variability. And I’ll give it bonus points for always being available, even through the pandemic and the lean times caused by the last election cycle.

Ramshot Enforcer is another medium speed powder in roughly the 2400/AA#9 range that works well in .357, .41, .44 Magnum loads.

I am not home or I would go check my loaded rounds for the bullet/charge weights I have used.

Stay safe.
That’s good to hear as that’s probably what I’ll go with. Have you tried it with regular SPP? That’s all I have and one reason I went with 2400. Alliant uses SPP in its data.

win231 / HP38 for mild loads

Unique, Universal, HS6, Power pistol for warm loads

H110/win296 or 2400 for max loads

Fixed it. Had cataract surgery this AM and my eyesight leaves something to be desired just yet.

I just went through that several months ago. I now need to have reading glasses for all my close up work. I just ordered this last week some safety glases with the proper doplier power I need for woking in my shop. Seeing the target at distance is great now, still have problem with iron sights.

I have not, only because I have a bunch of magnum primers and pre-primed the .357 cases. Wish I could be more help on that front for you..

Stay safe.

No problem. Enforcer is half the price of 2400 when one can even find 2400 locally. I'm pretty sure I can stop at Cabelas on the way home and find Enforcer 5 out of 7 days a week. I basically have to try it for that price and availability.

Shooters World Heavy pistol is great with the 158 Speers and Hornady XTPs. HS-6 is good, 231 is very good for a fast powder. Unique is classic. I am now trying AAC 5744, N110 and H110 for a comparison test. There are many choices for the 357.
I failed to add swhp to my list. I like it at 12.6 vs 13.7 of #9. Swhp is more consistent in the low end of the load range.

In the old days, around the last ice age, it was 2400 for .357mag.

In the '80s I moved to H110 to squeeze every bit of velocity I could out of it, but that comes with a big caution flags.

If I want to step down from these very hot loads to something more "normal" there are so many choices as mentioned above.
I don't think I'd go back to 2400. I'd try HS6 or Power Pistol instead.

Thanks for all the replies I found some HS-6 locally it was at a few stores and I like to see there doors stay open I picked up 3 pounds for about the same price as I could have bought it online. I came home and loaded up 6 rounds at 7.0 grains with a 158 grain lswc. it shot reliably but felt like a .38. I then loaded some at 7.5 things were getting better. 6 more a 7.9 grains and I stopped there. I have read that Lyman says 9.2 grains is top end for this bullet. And yes I'm using cci 550's

IMO and only my opinion:
While I really like W296/H110 is a great full.power powder in the .357 but it has a small load range.
2400 and AA#9 will work well for you and have a better loading range.
For medium rounds I really like HS-6 but AA#7, Power Pistol or W572 will also serve you well.

If I had to I can load anything in handgun ammo with my powder trinity which is:
W231/HP-38
HS-6/W540
W296/H110

When loading full power cast bullet loads I use either HS-6 or 2400.

Good luck, be safe...

I loaded up some 158 grain bayou extreme coated bullets with 9.2 grains of HS-6 under them. They are chronographing between 1,020 to 1,050 fps. I am pretty happy with this load as it shoots around a 1.5" group at 45 feet.
What primers are you using with that?
