I used to slip my boat in Croton-on-Hudson, and would occasionally venture up river and stop and take a look around. They used to warn you about un-exploded ordinance, but in my eyes, the most dangerous thing there was the abundance of poison ivy.

I was always hoping to find something interesting, but never did. The structure itself was pretty cool, but it's extremely deteriorated at this point.

Real interesting. Thanks for posting that. I knew the place was now derelict and state owned but never knew much about the details. Must have been pretty impressive once upon a time. Too bad it was never kept up.

I had an old Bannerman's catalog back way back when. It was fascinating and astounding as to what you could buy from them back then.
I drove by there one summer when I worked on a dude ranch between Spring and Fall sessions of college. Neat old place.

My Grand Dad bought a Trapdoor Springfield from Bannermans for $7.50 when he decided to move to Wyoming to homestead. Never know about rustlers and Injuns don'tcha know.

There was a Cavalry patrol stopped and watered their horses and filled their canteens at his windmill in the 1920's. They were out looking for a bunch of drunk Indians that had jumped the Pine Ridge reservation in SD. They were stealing horses.. The troops were carrying Springfield 1903s at the time. A hired hand did see some Indians about 6 miles away the day before.

That old Springfield moldered in the saddle room for over 40 years. He never fired it, but the stock dried out and the barrel rusted over time. I found it when I was 4 years old. My Dad said I was too young to have it. It sat for another 25 years in my Dad's closet after my Grandparents abandoned the place and moved to town.

I found it when I moved back to the ranch in really bad shape and resurrected it.
Poor man's Officer's Model. I have taken Antelope, Mule Deer and an Elk with it.

Seen it often from the train while visiting family up north. Lo, these many years ago...

Some years ago I bought a Spanish Mauser 93 that had come from an estate in Vermont. I don't know, but strongly suspect, that it was one of the surplus rifles Bannerman sold after the Spanish-American War.
