loading 40 cal, S&W m&p shield. Using 165P gr. plated bullets . Have the Speer and Lee manuals . Speer data , 5.3 grs. of bullseye. Loaded a couple mags. A lot of recoil . Seemed to be a very hot load. Went back to the manual and noticed 5.3 is plus P, I do not need that hot of a bullet . Should I just drop my charge or go to another powder ?

chief,

I don't have much data on Bullseye and 40S&W, but following is what I have using plated bullets:

40SW, P229, 3.9" barrel
COL: 1.142""
Xtreme, 165gr, CPRNFP, Bullseye, 5.1gr, CCI500
Average: 959
ES: 15
SD: 6.6
Force: 337
PF: 158
Velocities: 966, 960, 951, 966, 955

This wasn't one of my better grouping loads, but it does not seem very hot.

What COL are you loading?

There are published loads that are heavier than that, but it does sound stiff. Are you aware that the .40 has a stronger recoil impulse than some other pistols?

I use Longshot to good effect, as it is clean burning, and fairly bulky (no double charges possible).

My .40 Shield hasn't arrived yet; still waiting for NY paperwork. But I've heard the faster powders like Bullseye give snappy recoil in the .40 Shield and that the Speer #14 starting loads for the .40 are a bit hot.

I'm assembling some start loads using the 165 PHP with 5.7 gr. Of Unique. That's about .5 gr. Below the recommended start load. Planning to try about 7.5 gr. Blue Dot as well. Both powders are slower than Bullseye. Hoping for a reliable load that's in the .38 Spcl. +P range as far as energy.

40 cal. - bullseye powder

Thanks for the help. Glad I have more then 1 Manual. Finally found my Lyman 49th edition . It plainly states , 165 gr. 40 cal. using bullseye powder , 4.8 to 5.4 . That is for jackeded bullets. I am using plated bullets. so I will use the starting load of 4.8 grs. and go from there.

Do you have any other powders? BE would not/is not my first choice for 40 SW. I would recommend something a tad slower if you can find any. HP 38, Unique Something like those.

Yes you can use it and there is data but does not mean it is ideal.

I have been using titegroup for my .40S&W glock 22 and .27 berry's 180 gr fn the load on it is 4.5 is what I have been using nice groups not max load 4.7 is advised max load on Hodgdon's web site.

40 s&w +p... I wasn't aware that such a thing existed.
I've never loaded 40 S&W but I use 6.0 BE behind 180 grains bullets in 10mm and I consider it a nice medium load. Powerful but I can shoot 100+ rounds without any problems.

There is no such thing as +P .40 S&W loads.

In my Speer manual, the 5.3 load is marked with a cross, not a + sign.

Then under that the notation says
Loads marked with a "T" approximate 40 S&W law enforcement version (.40 Lite").

So, your +P load that's snappy isn't +P.
It's as light as you can go and still get a functioning gun.

Yes, when you read reloading manuals, the Devil is in the Details!"
It pays to read the foot-notes too.
