These guys built a 400 legend upper based off the saami specs released a couple months ago and wildcatted some brass to get it shooting.

I'm into wildcat AR's and hunting caliber AR's so I've been pining for a 40 caliber AR for years now. I have a 358 Yeti and this december I bought a 350 legend and 45 raptor AR15 barrels, so I am not sure I will be getting a 400 legend to go with them, but knowing myself I probably will have to have one.

I’m on board with the theory and concept even if I will never get one.

It feels like they should have used .410 projectiles but I suppose this is piggybacking off the 10mm popularity wave that is happening again.

I said this a while back.
"Well here we are again I have a high cap 9mm and a 7+1 45 and they're introducing a 40 lol"

The 400 Legend is a nice concept, if a guy is looking for a heavy hitting AR cartridge and doesn't already have one.

I like the idea, but with all of the straightwall AR rounds out there now this is not all that exciting. We have straight walls in everything from 22 LR up to 50 Beowulf. Hard to get excited about a 40 cal straightwall when .35 and .45 have already been done.

It’s Lego Rifle stuff, hard to get excited. It’s all been done to death. Like an LS swap in a classic car, yeah it’s cool but it’s just not exciting anymore.

For those members that are limited by cartridge length and straight wall cartridges. This is a neat choice! I really would like Winchester to reintroduce the 351 & 401 self loader rifles in these legend cartridges.

I take it that it uses 40 S&W and 10mm bullets? None of the articles address it specifically that I can find but it seems it is the exact same caliber and around the same bullet wait. Seems more interesting than the 360 Buckhammer anyways.

Saami spec for bullet diameter is .400" so yes you can use the same bullets as 10mm, but like the 350 legend you probably don't want to other than for plinking purposes since jacketed pistol bullets basically turn into varmint bullets at 2000+ fps.

I'm excited about it because it means availability of long, heavy .400" bullets for my 10mm Magnum, which will allow potent subsonic loads and more reliable feeding with bullets seated out further in the AR magazine.

I am hoping for that as well because if I am going to get one it will be for shooting suppressed. Hoping that someone will start making some 250-300 grain subsonic expanding bullets or maybe a 300+ grain maker rex bullet like the 280 grain bullet they make for the 350 legend. I bought parts to machine a fast twist 350 legend barrel, so now thinking about waiting till brass and reamers becomes available and sourcing a fast twist 10mm blank instead.

If the 400 Legend hits critical mass Makers will make a subsonic expanding. Their 425gr 450 Bushmaster subsonic expanding are sweet!
