I recently came across some 44 mag brass and don't have a 44 mag, but I do have a 357 mag and need brass for that.

Theoretically do you think I should buy this brass (cheap from a scrap yard) to trade it for 357 mag brass, seems like fired 44 mag brass is relatively hard to find. They also have lots of shinny 38spl think anyone would want that?

I know that there is a trading post but I'm not actually trying to trade/selling anything yet.

Thanks

I would trade you. at least for some. I don't need thousands of 44. I would think you could find a taker.

Ya, been thinking about getting a .44mag

I don't want to buy new .357 brass because it seems like a waste of $$$ ($20/100 seems standard) when fired brass is just as good. Might as well buy loaded 357 for $16/50.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Down here loaded 357mag is going for about 34.00/50, I saw some 38spl around 18.00 and that seemed like a good price.

Seems like if you have a .357, you would want that!

I shoot more .38 Spl in my .357's then .357's.

Nothing says you have to start grass fires with the muzzle blast every time you shoot a .357!

38s...meh...I want the .357s because I can also load them @ 38spl velocities, and without the carbon ring in the chamber. Mostly shooting from a Marlin 1894C anyway. But I will probably end up using some of the 38s though.

I also want to load up some 180 grainers, can you even do that in a 38spl case?

Which also brings me to an eventual goal of slinging the heaviest slugs I can at a subsonic (~<1000fps) velocity from the rifle. Why do I want to do that? Well, lets just say that I have a 9mm can that can be put to good use when I get around to gettin the Marlin threaded. If anyone has any recipes for this, it would be much appreciated, because subsonic rifle loads are hard to find for the .357. I did see another thread here discussing this same goal, but if I remember right, the guy was wanting to use 38spl cases.:banghead: Maybe that what I'll have to end up doing.

As far as the scrap yard goes, they have a big 55 gallon drum full of all sorts of brass ranging from total crap to quite nice. Kind of a chore to sort through, but the price is right.

Thanks again for all the input.

Meh, I'm a die-hard brass buzzard, but even I would be leery of brass found in a scrapyard. Swept up from a range? Sure! But digging around in a barrel at a metals recycler? Mmm.....

Why is that? Don't you think this is exactly how it gets to the scrap yard (swept up from a range)? In fact the manager of the yard told me it mostly comes in big lots from gun ranges. Now that I think about it, one of the rangemasters of a local range clued me in to this place because he goes there himself, and he works at a freakin range! I do inspect every piece since I'm paying for them, unlike the free range scroungings.

If my brass is trashed I go ahead and squish it in a vise that's right by my press. I would hope other reloaders would do the same. That way you know not to use it and it also helps mark it as unfit for other reloaders.

The horrors of a .38 carbon ring in a .357 is a vastly over rated web legend.

Not to me it isnt. I shot almost exclusively lead bullets in my 357 loads. When loading with 38 cases I have to scrub the holy heck out of the cylinder where its cut for the 357s, that little lip inside the chamber. I have thousands of 38spcl brass that I dont use, because I got tired of it. I now load all of it in 357 cases and call it a day.

Not a catastrophy, yes, but a legend or myth, no. Its most definately true.

Amen brother !!!!

I once let a cyl soak a month to remove the crud ring , I think the last time I flared a 357 case & drove it in the cyl scrapin it out !!!

There's a lot of people shooting new factory ammo in my local range and when I sort range brass, I separate out 44 Mag, 45GAP and 380 Auto that I don't load for.

When it is birthday/Christmas time, I put these cases in a box, wrap it, and put a bow on it. Instant gift for a reloader reloading these calibers.

Also keep in mind I'm mostly shooting these out of a Marlin rifle, seems to me like that's even harder to clean than a revolver cyl.

Well, the scrapyards I know of around here are too big and busy, they have enough headaches just herding all the scrap sellers through. They don't even want to talk about SELLING anything to you. With my luck, I'd find a big bucket full of some reloaders scrap brass, and end up with nothing but split cases and Berdan primed garbage.

I did see a 5 gal. bucket full of cases in a scrapyard one time, but I forced myself to walk away. I've already got more damn brass than I'll ever be able to fill up. And if I ever DID get all those cases loaded, boxed and stored, you'd be reading about the ATF raid on my house in the papers.

Yet I still bend over to pick up every one I see, and I've been known to go out of my way to shootin' holes and Bubba Ranges that I know about, just to pick up brass. It's a friggin' sickness, I tell ya........

Can anyone direct me to reloading info for less than magnum (38special +P) loading info for 357 mag brass? Would save having to sort and have two brass sizes and die sets (turret) for my 38/357 revolver.

i agree. after shooting 38 sp. when i wanted to use 357 mag cartridges, they would not go into the cylinder. after a lot of scrubbing, elbow grease, and time, finally got all the crud out so the 357 mag shells would load. now i just use 357 cartridge shells (i keep full load shells separate from plinking and target loads) for everything and just change the powder charge and bullet. gave away almost all of the 38 sp cartridges to my club.

you didnt state bullet size. the current lee loading manual has lots of load information for various bullets types and sizes and powders and each bullet type is sorted from highest to lowest velocity that should help pick something in the 357 magnum.

if you check the 38 special loading, look at the higher velocity loadings for the bullet size and weight desired which should be easily handled by any 357 magnum firearm. just dont go too low in the loadings to ensure that the bullet exits the barrel especially if you are using a rifle.

Let me suggest the Lewis Lead Remover. And if you really want to "kick it up" chuck it in a drill. Tedium is kaput, nicht hier... :scrutiny:
