Resized_20230223_185131.jpeg Got me some fiocchi defense ammo. Says 1330 fps on box but has virtually no crimp and for sure no roll crimp. Haven't shot yet but if these were my handloads I'd get beat up.

Lots of factory ammunition doesn't have much crimp. I think they're mostly relying on neck tension, and customers not knowing better.

Thx, my first 44, I know I crimp 357 way more and haven't purchased much if any factory ammo but 9. When weather straightens out I'll shoot a few before I get components to load my own.

I use very little crimp with my 44 mag.

Do the usual test, load six, shoot five, inspect the last. If the bullet didn't move you are good to go.

Oh I am sure they are gtg was just kinda surprised with lack of crimp. Like I said I haven't bought factory rounds for many moons. Did get me thinking though about why I worry so much about a good roll crimp when maybe good taper crimp works just as well.

That’s certainly a legitimate question. I know I crimp the heck out of my magnums out of habit and it has worked with no ill effects, with that said, I might have to go MCB’s approach and see what I could get away with before jump crimp issues. I imagine the longevity of my brass might appreciate it.

When I get some bullets I'll most likely use 2400 and honestly won't roll crimp too tight as maybe it doesn't matter. Will roll me some xtp's or gold dots with h110 and I'll feel better with good roll crimp on those.

Break out the chronograph and run a cylinder full of those over it just to see what they actually make in your guns. I learned a few years back that factory ammo isn’t exactly the pinnacle of performance some folks think (or claim) it to be. That 1420fps Fiocchi .357Mag 142gr TMJ-TC stuff is pretty good but it doesn’t come close to 1400fps in my 5-1/2” Pietta. My Accurate 4100 loads with the same bullet DO reach that velocity. The Fiocchi is good stuff but, it’s not that good.

Geo, I agree. I bet they would not chrono near as what box says. I guess my thought was that for a 44mag round there is virtually no crimp.

I'll dig out my chrono if the weather straightens out and put a couple through it for fun.

Lol, All this talk and I haven't even shot the dang thing yet except at spots on my wall.
