44 mag. for deer.

The last ten years or so I hunt deer exclusively with handguns and handgun caliber carbines. The hunt has become more important to me than the kill. That and the fact that killing a deer means work and my hunt is over, whereas going home empty handed means getting to relax and looking forward to tomorrows hunt. Years back when I carried the ought-six with a 3-9 scope on it, 99% of my shots were within 100 yards anyway. But years ago, getting a good deer every deer season was a priority and not getting one was looked upon as a bad season. Nowadays, lettin' 'em go for the kids or grandkids to shoot gives me more satisfaction.

Archery doesn't require practice? That's news to me. I guess I've wasted thousands of hours practicing over the years. Give someone who has never shot/hunted and take them out with both a rifle and a bow. The chances of them hitting the target with the rifle are ridiculously higher. Learning to draw at the correct time is an art in itself.

I bought a Marlin 1894C in 357 Mag to specifically hunt deer with. We only have a two week firearm season in PA. And I have never had a shot present itself that is more than 100 yards. I don't feel under gunned with the 357 so I definitely wouldn't with a 44 Mag.

Makes you wonder how's the better hunter, the guy who hits a deer 400yds. away or the guy who stalks within 50 yds. and takes his ?

I'm not claiming to be a 'better' hunter... I've lost more than I've shot. I am a PERSISTENT hunter, though. Sooner or later, apparently, I manage to sneak up on one of the dumb ones.

Interesting thread for me as im still debating between a .44mag and a .357mag in a handi rifle for this upcoming deer season during primitive weapon season. Has anyone shot the. 44mag handi? Im wondering about the accuracy.

44 mag for deer

I have killed a few deer with the 44 mag in both rifle and pistol. Good round out to 100-150 yards with the proper bullet. Took one elk with the 44 mag. It was a standing broadside shot at 50 yards. The elk fell after running 50 yards.

I use bow and hangun year round nowadays for deer. Can't beat a 44 mag in rifle or handgun IMO...When I hunt with black powder I use an old sidelock and I have killed a zulu of deer with it...I bought a an inline type 2 years ago and aint been able to bring myself to use it. I think I gonna give it to my son who likes them new fangled fakes...

I killed a lot of deer in college with a borrowed 44 rifle. I no longer have access to it but I still shoot some deer with a 30-30.

I learned long ago that the best deer is the one that runs uphill to the truck before it dies. 4 years ago a buddy of mine shot a doe in a creek bottom. The doe ran uphill, across a logging road, and actually ran into the guys truck where she collapsed. That was my favorite deer of all time. I once shot a nice 5 point with about 5 minutes of shooting light left. I shot the deer down an old logging road, through a hardwood bottom, and across a 30 ft wide creek. My Audi sedan was not 4 wheel drive:) and it was 11 PM by the time I got home. With my 5 point and that is an eastern 5 point, not a western 5 point.

Oh, I thought to add a little more.

My father in law often uses a .44 Ruger Semi-auto carbine. It's taken many deer over the years as it was his first rifle. It'll be fine within 100 yards (that's about the longest shot we have anyways.... well 150), but if you want to see something neat. Set a target out about a hundred yards and watch it with a spotting scope (set at 60x or better) while someone shoots the target. You can see the vapor trail of the bullet arcing down (dropping). You won't see it with a high powered rifle, but it's pretty neat to see with .44 Mag.

A couple of you guys misread, or didnt understand what he was saying. Here it is:

I am not sure why I have such a compulsion to hunt with the 1894. Maybe because it's like archery that does not require practice.

What he is saying is that he likes using it because its limited to archery ranges in his opinion, but also because it doesnt require the practice that archery does.
