I just got an invite to go hog hunting first thing in the morning. I would like to use my 44 magnum pistol with a 12 inch barrel made by taurus. The only problem is that all I have are 44 cartridges for self defense. Would you use these rounds on hogs?

I am taking my 35 remington but like to know your opinion.

Hard cast bullets seem to work best on Hogs.
SD rounds are generally designed to dump a bunch of energy quickly but don't always penetrate a hog.
Neck shots may be the answer.

I was just wondering if anyone had tried it before. I know these hogs are hard to put down some times. I normally use a 240 grain hard cast bullet loaded loaded with 23 grains of h110 which I get about 1500 fps out of a 12" barrel. Just don't have the raw material to make reload right now.

So I thought I would use my self defense rounds. Might still try it on the smaller hogs.

A 240g HP at 1500fps may not be ideal, but if you can hit'em where it counts, will kill them. I'd still prefer cast, wide meplat at 260g or above.

Anything in the woods go with hardcast lead. Travels straight, breaks things that need to be broken, and it's time proven.

300 grain Cast Performance Bullet with a CCI Large Pistol Magnum primer. 20 grains of H-110 powder.....and I have Remington cases.
Cases and Primers simply because that's what I had on hand.
Bullet and powder mix, reputation.

you didn't say what SD loads you have, but, personally I use 240 winchester white box flat points and they work like a charm

personal defense rounds are meant for humans, for hogs go with cast, sometimes I use the Buffalo bore 300 gr JHP, they do the job real well and I kill hogs daily.
