44 special powders

Only reason I brought up Brian Pierce Handloader Data with 296/H110 was because
the Op has a 44 Magnum,
I provided as much Safe information as I could. The 3% reduced Down load information is Good to include Blue68F100.

*As Always- Research In great detail before Load development.

I folks!

I would like to know what powder in my possesion that would make good ammo.

I have 600 Starline 44spl case and 240gr jacket bullets, 240gr lead bullets (hard cast) and 200gr rnfp lead bullets (hard cast). So far, 44 magnum are back order anywhere in Canada, and it is why i'm reloading 44 spl at the moment.

As for the powder i have:

Titegroup, HP-38, W244, Universal, HS-6, Blue Dot, W572, W296 and IMR 4227.

As for reloading books i have Lyman 50th, Lyman 3rd edition cast bulkets, Hornady 10th edition, Lee 2nd edition 2019 update and Hodgdon 2020 and 2021 magazines.

Any advices are welcome.

TiteGroup is a great 44 SPL powder, especially with the 240 grain lead bullets. That is my personal favorite powder for sold target shooting loads in 44 SPL. I use AA5 to push the jacketed 240's out of 44 SPL, but my next choice would likely be HP-38.

Lots of great advice already listed here,

Tighgroup will work but run really warm in 44 spcl

W296(H110) wants to fill the case, so they will be high pressure loads

I don't underload IMR4227, either. While I love the powder for 44 magnum, I don't run it in special loads.

You don't have it listed, but I really like Unique for 44 special. 5-7.5 grains under a 240 grain projectile is perfect for nearly any task.

I second the Unique, cleaner at high end. Yet 6.5 is plenty for me

Yeah...I don't really load "skeeter" 7.5 loads, no need for it. I'll admit that for my Bulldog, 5g of UNQ is perfectly fine. For a larger revolver, like you said, 6.5 is great.

I use 9 grains in my "house" 44 magnum loads under a 240g projectile. Plenty of power and fun to shoot.

Unique is a real pain to get at the moment, not sure why. I haven't seen a jar of it for a very long time. I've seen nearly every powder I typically use, but not that one.

Some good suggestions and some confusing posts. W231 is excellent for target loads. Can't imagine using H110/296 in a Special load. Maybe in a hot +P, otherwise 'magnum only'.

Op is limited on certain powders, looking at what he can do with what he has….. For his 44 mag firearms, Yet can’t obtain 44 magnum ammo.

Not confusing to me.

The OP never stated explicitly whether he was needing magnum ammo or magnum brass. As an experienced reloader, he could be referring to a need for brass, not commercial ammo. It wouldn't be difficult to find confusion in that.

I will be using my 629-6 with 6" barrel and my Big Boy 44spcl/44magnum lever action .

I guess I just provided information - And figured OP would Determine what He wanted, since that’s what he asked for.

No ripples in the pond, just a wave.

That’s how I read it… Simply

Yup. That's why before giving any advice I ask what folks are using. Loads for a 6" Smith and a 2'1/2" Bulldog are going to be very different. At least, they should be.

And since he stated 629 and a Lever action…. Well, anyway. Usually I just stick with Unique. That 296 a bit to Close to the threshold for me ….. Magnum firearm or not.

The issue is dismissing someone else's post when you are missing something.

Ok?

Let’s not get Ripples in the pond…. I Think you may have Read my post incorrect. That happens.

Op asked for Information regarding 296. He provided info on firearm, Then I Stated my information...

That’s not very confusing in any way… Shape or Form.

On my opinion

- Op states Magnum ammo is not available, and stated he has magnum firearms he will be shooting….. He has x type of powder, Provide information.

And…. That happened.

All good Real gun

I agree, based on my experience with it.... and even in .44SPC loads in his Henry. As I mentioned, he's got what I believe to be 2 excellent midrange powders to work with... W572 and Universal, and possibly HS6, which I'm not familiar with but it seems others are. I wouldn't open the door to frustration trying to use the slower powders.

IMR4227 is one of my favorite 44 magnum powders (honestly, I have few). Under a 240g SJSP projectile, they're very accurate in both my Super Redhawk and Henry rifle. For the Henry, it was honestly my go-to for accurate loads up until I messed around with Accurate No 7, which produces VERY accurate rounds for the Henry.

Hodgdon May not- Yet the Information I stated and provided in detail from Handloader magazine certainly does.
All of that was on page one in this thread
