The lock only has to fail one time for it to be a serious problem. Just one time. Just because you have never seen one fail does not mean that it can't. They have and it has been documented for years.

Too many documented reports of it coming on unintentionally when shooting the gun. With today's gun care products rust prevention is not a issue unless you just intend to never care for it.
Citation? I think there is a lot of anecdotes about the lock having issues. I think most people don't like it simply because it's not needed, they'll never use it (I sure don't) and they resent what it represents (government intrusion into the design of firearms)...and it's ugly of course.
Both revolvers are available in a no lock version like all centennial J frames.
The main reason I don't like the lock, the default condition is locked, not unlocked. If the tiny spring becomes dislodged or breaks the gun becomes unless. I'd the default state was unlocked I wouldn't worry about it, other than the hole is ugly lol.
The only thing I've seen or read on this issue is a quote from Massad Ayoob where the lock has glitched under the duress of full magnum loads in scandium-framed guns. I do not have any link to said quote...
Who makes this "plug" referenced to a few times here in this thread? I have two J-frames I'd like to fill the gap that is left on the left side of the hammer once the lock is removed. Yes, I might go0gle it but since it has been mentioned I might see a brand name first. Thanks in advance.
