I sold my Ruger SP101. It was my first hangun and primarily for HD. I did not have my CCW at the time. I was able to disassemble the trigger, polish the components, and add a Wolff spring set myself. The trigger was much smoother and lighter without any ftf.

I now carry an xd9 as my primary, but my 442 is used often. The trigger mechanism of the 442 is obviously not as accessible as the Ruger but since I carry this often, I would like to improve the trigger.

I used the "search" function as I am sure this has been asked many times before but I admit that I am search idiot and couldn't find what I was looking for.

I appreciate recommendations on the best place to have a trigger job for a J frame

You might try it yourself...

I've done a couple of Smiths and they aren't terribly hard.

Take out the side plate screws, turn the side plate down and tap the grip frame with a wooden dowel.

After side plate falls off just take a look at the inner workings. It is pretty obvious what needs to be polished. Go slow and you should be fine.

As far as springs go I've gone with a lighter trigger rebound spring but leave the main spring alone.

Good luck,

R

First step IMO would simply be to get some snap caps and dry fire it a few thousand times. You can then remove the sideplate (per post #3, and use a proper gunsmith screwdriver) and flush the internals and relube.

I did this with my 642, which had a gritty action at first. But the action did slicken up significantly. So much so that no further work was required.

I have a box with S&W hammers and triggers in it. Unfortunately they are all junk. They got that way because of various individualls who "polished" them without understanding that under a very thin skin the core was soft. Replacing the damaged parts was often very expensive, and then there was labor...

I hope no one here adds to a similar collection. :uhoh:
