i am a small caliber guy, and the only thing i used to have was a nef 45-70. twenty years have gone by and i feel the need for a big bore. this one will be in my t/c encore, laminted stock, and factory heavy mgm 20" barrel in 444 marlin. before i go any further, i had a stroke and my right half of my body is around 20%, i handload, everything is shot off a 3legged sticks or caldwel's dead shot. i plan on using cast bullets 300-350gr, will these kill deer at at 100 yards? i plan on the cast bullets to be travelling at 1400-1700fps. should a muzzle break be worth it? i don't plan on using jacketed bullets(hornady, speer). if i have more questions, i'll ask and i will tell you what you think of this.

thanks!!!

Will a 300 grain bullet moving at 1,400 fps kill a deer? Oh, yeah. Not a problem!

That's not a whole lot more powerful than a top end .44 Mag, though, so I doubt you'd need to go nutz with a muzzle brake or other serious recoil-reducing steps.

Even just loading that case up with TrailBoss would give you plenty of thump to kill a whitetail (probably 2, end-to-end) without hurting you.

you can load it down to 44-40 speed if you want, a lever action in 44 mag may be better for you as it will be much lighter and handier to use.eastbank.

As for killing deer; no problem.

I have a 444 Marlin Encore handgun with no brake so, my answer would be you don't need a brake. Recoil should be something like a 20 gauge shotgun if that's of any help.

Don't give him falso hope Sam. The 444 with 300-350's is WAY underpowered to take rabbits even at point blank range. But, I think that combo is plenty suited for moose.

Ok all joking aside, what do people think the cartridges are suited for? Why were they even made? Like the "45-70 for deer" thread. Are you kidding me? If it can kill a human, it can kill a deer. If a 22 can kill a deer, why in John Moses Browning's name can't a 444? BUT, A 700NE can't kill a squirrel if you miss.
