Looking for some--help--advice--experience---suggestions--on the purchase of a 45/70 rifle. I am thinking about a CowBoy type 45/70 for a little long range shooting and CowBow shooting. Probably a singleshot (Sharps or spenser)or a 1886 Repro 45/70. Any ideas???

Also I have been offered a "slightly" used Winchester 1886 Takedown 45/70 (New repro made in 1986 by Winchester) for $1,300---any thoughts on the price??

Thanks
Ronin

I don't know if you've seen it, but the Marlin 1895 Cowboy is a pretty affordable cowboy-style rifle. It's got a 26" octagonal barrel if memory serves which I thought looked pretty sharp. You can put a tang sight on it would be fun to play around with. Obviously it's not single shot though. I just brought it up cause I wanted a gun like you're talking about but couldn't afford one and that seems to be a reasonable option for my budget.

For cowboy action shooting the rifle must be in a pistol caliber such as .45 Colt, .44-40, .357 and so on. They also have long range shooting matches for cowboy type guns.

I would recommend that before you buy anything you go to one and see what the people there are using. The rifle that strikes you may some problems that do not show up until many rounds have been put through it.

I think the price on the Winchester is high, but if u like the rifle a lot, don't let the price scare ya,it isn't all that far out of line, and they are great rifles.Heavy but nice to own and shoot.

I've got a marlin 1895CB, added a marbles tang sight(midwayusa #123620),

it's a good shooter, the bore is slightly oversized, but I shoot a cast HBFP bullet that mics .460 that is accurate,

it's got a slim stock, with shotgun style butt, with the above bullet at approx 1500fps, recoil is tolerable standing.

look here and it'll give more details on the marlin rifles marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/Cowboy/1895Cowboy.aspx

May not fit what you want but I can only speak to a Ruger #1 in 45-70. It is a fantastic shooter and a game thumper indeed! I love the round as well as the gun. Besides, it is a very short and handy rifle to carry in the game woods.

Whatever you get, set up to reload for it. It is VERY a versatile round and reloading is much easier on the budget!

If you are looking for a long range shooter like for BPRC then you are looking for a shilo sharps or a winchester highwall.

Shilo make very fine firearms and boy do you pay for the craftsmanship too. The 45/70 is an ok cartridge if you are looking at shooting long range you might look into a different cartridge like the 45-90 or 45-110 or even the 40-110 or 40-120.

If you are loooking for a lever gun then marlin is the way to go. with the 1895. Being the one I want.

Marlin offers a .45/70 levergun tailored for Cowboy Action Shooting now.
26" octagon barrel, full magazine, and standard rifling so you can shoot lead bullets without issues and a whole lot cheaper than a Winchester copy and with a better tapered barrel that swings better than the tube on the Winchester copy..

I have owned three of the 1886 Winchester marked copies and two of the Browning marked copies including a carbine.
I kept the Winchester marked 1886 Extra Lightweight.
It is the best of all of them.

my dad bought a 1895 guide gun 45/70 in stainless and this thing is nice i love shooting it and i dont know how long is long range for you but im sure w/ the hornady leverevoultion shells w/ the soft ballistic tip would be alright out to probably 250 or 300 yrds

I just ordered an 1871 Buffalo Classic rifle. It is a single shot made by Harrington and Richardson- that runs around $350.It comes with match sights on it,and it is drilled for a scope, but I think you can also get it with leaf type sights for Cowboy action shooting. It has a 32 inch medium weight barrel on it,and weighs about 8 1/2 pounds.
