Question for the group I want a lower recoil load with henry Lever action with 405 grain cast bullet. Why, because I have a big bag full. Will the contender load work? If no Why not?

comparing the 2 loads I found in my reloading book

405Grain Cast
H4198 Powder using 27 grains
Trim Length 2.10
Coal 2.54
velocity 1057

Found a 405 grain load but its for a contender pistol
405 Grain Cast
IMR 4198 21.5 grains
Trim 2.095
Coal 2.55
Velocity 733

Sure will. In fact, I just tested some of my IMR4198 loads in my 32" 1885...

30grn IMR4198 under a cast 405grn RN bullet gave me 1270fps, for reference, so that 1050~ data is fairly accurate, depending on the test barrel length, and your actual barrel length.

Besides IMR4198, another good powder to try is AA5744.

Thank you for the response Trying to use what I have available Everything thing I see looks fine but lower recoil for her to shoot

Well... and understand, any 405grn bullet is going to tell you it's on the move... if you see what I mean. I do like IMR4198 for the .45-70, it doesn't pound your shoulder like slower powders might.

Also... do you have any 2400 on hand? Or Unique?

No Sir
only other is trail Boss But cant find a proven load

Absolutely! No difference, really. I quit shooting 'lever-action' loads long ago... and only shoot Trapdoor loads. I sold my Marlin 1895, but that's what I shot in it as well.

I don't know if it's easy for you to get a lb of Unique or 2400, but I'd recommend 12grs of Unique under a 405gr cast LFP. The time I shot this load in an H&R, it reminded me of my muzzleloader... really soft on the recoil, but really whomped a steel plate at 50 and 100 yards.

Unique, from what I understand, isn't so position sensitive like 2400. I think a levergun needs a load thats not position sensitive.

I recall a guy who shot 18grs of 2400 with his 405's... he used a quarter square of toilet paper as a spacer just to keep to powder back at the primer, but IIRC, he was running that load in a Sharps.

15grn Unique under a 405grn cast is THE classic low-velocity load. I've shot some myself and it's a good load. One word of caution, however... I WOULD use a filler on it. I have witnessed, personally, a case head blowout with this load... the only logical cause was detonation. The shooter did not use a filler, but 'muzzled-up' before each shot. It's a fun load, but I just shot my last 15 rounds of it... and I won't load any more. 1200fps out of my 1885...

I also shot some 2400 loads, 19 and 20grn under a cast and coated 385grn RN bullet. 2400 has about the same case fill as Unique, and doesn't require a Magnum primer, either. 1260fps, but likely around 1200fps with a 405grn... same as 15grn Unique.

When I do use smokeless in my trapdoor it’s 27 grains of H4198 with a Lee HB 405 grain powder coated bullet which gives average 1210 fps.

My regular load for trapdoors is 28 gns H4198 with a 405 gn cast bullet. Gives about 1250 fps, accurate and moderate recoil. I would be very leery of using Unique as it would be too easy to double charge if not very careful.

I use A5744 to for my sharps . In my rifle this powder does better than others I have tried.

I really like 405gr lead bullets with 13gr of TrailBoss. It is a very comfortable load in my Marlin 1985.

Try the 13 grains of Red Dot load. I use it under the Lyman 330 grain HP and it scoots along flat as you can get at 100 yards. I figure 12-1300fps. Low noise and no appreciable recoil.
