Just got a new short barrel (18.5 inch) 45-70 lever-action rifle. I'm looking for some moderate loads using 405 grain lead bullets. Any help would be appreciated. If you have problems with posting load recipes, posting your favorite powder would help. Thanks.

I used Unique and 2400 for all the loads I used in my Ruger #1S 45-70. remember that the powder charge is part of the recoil formula so the less powder you use the milder the recoil. there isn't any reason to shoot a 405 grain bullet at more than 1,500 fps or more. anymore than and it ceases to be fun. a 45-70 isn't more than a 150 yard round in my opinion. any 300 to 400 grain bullet at 1,500 fps will work just fine.

Look thru your reloading manuals at the trapdoor data using,4227,sr4759,5744,4198,rx7, and 3031 and then go with which ever one you can get or have on hand.

I have a new Trapdoor 45-70 load I'm very happy with in my Marlin levergun too.

It's a 405gr FN Cast bullet over 29.0gr AA5744 using a CCI-200 primer.
That load is very accurate in both rifles mentioned above.

If you want to try something a little different, 55 grains of FFg blackpowder under a 405gr bullet is a ton of fun, an authentic carbine load and isn't too bad on the shoulder.

I created blackpowder rifle safe loads using AA5744. This powder works exceptionally well in these big cases with cast bullets.

The Speer 400 grain sp over 53 grains of 3031 gives 1800fps from my old Marlin M95.

I think this is what you want:
