A buddy claims that he has two South American .45 ACP military surpluss revolvers that take moon clips and he will sell them for $200 each. What might he have?

The Smith and Wesson Brazilian Model 1937 which in unaltered form is identical to the US 1917 except the plain grips are a bit thicker. There is a Brazilian crest on the right side and a commercial sequence serial number.

They have been imported for years, quality varies greatly and $200 a copy sounds too good!

If they are, in fact, S&W 1917s made for Brazil, you better grab 'em both...Some outfit in CA brought a few thousand of them in back in '88 and sold them then for $156 each. I bought one, doubled my money in a year and wish I'd hung on to it.

If it is a south american copy, you're on your own.

Those old DA revolvers are cool. I found old US military Colt went to grab several .45AutoRim 50 packs by Black Hills? which were on closeout. The "Ole' Sarge York" gun turned out to be Model 1909 and chambered for .45LC and not .45Auto.

I have one of the Brazilian contract Smiths. It's not much to look at, but it's a fine shooting piece:

I paid a considerable amount more than what your buddy is asking for each and knowing how well it shoots would do it again. I'd grab both if I had the chance at that asking price.

Greg

right Owen - if you don't buy them have 'em contact me - shooting 45 acp in a revolver is a blast!

Brazilian 1917 S&W's?
$200 dollars each, or a pair for $400?

$400 each, or $800 for a pair would still be a darn good deal.

Any 45 acp revolver thats in good shape and locks up tight will be worth $200. I'd buy them both and sell one for $400 and then have a free 45acp revolver. ;)

Any .45 ACP revolver that's in good shape & locks up tight will be worth far more then $200 dollars.

Disregarding Tarui and Ruger convertable Blackhawks?
They will pretty much have to be either a Colt New Service 1917, or S&W 1917, 1950 Target, Model 25, or Model 625.

Any of the bunch, in almost any kind of shape, is worth well over $200 dollars.

I don't believe they were made in Brazil...they were made by S&W under contract for delivery to Brazil.

Still have mine I bought in the 80's for $150. The grips were cracking and falling off, but the pistol was very nice with vg-exc finish & exc shiny bore & chambers (I think someone must have changed them out because the grips surely didn't match the pistol's finish). It's a nice variation of the M1917 with the nice Brazilian crest and civilian finish. My wife gave me an adjustable sight that you install using the top sideplate screwhole and it shoots really well. I don't know if they still make them, but the guy used to advertise in the American Rifleman (early 90's). Wish I had bought more - snap those two up for sure!

Those were contract guns made by S&W FOR Brazil, not made in Brazil.
Genuine Smiths.
