.45 ACP, still viable for military or police?

I always laugh at these discussions as they end the same. This one is at a point that people are rehashing the rehashed stuff that’s been rehashed over and over and over.

Personally I like both. To me they serve different purposes. But I’m not military or LE. So I have the luxury of carrying what I want and/or can afford.

Frankly anyone that says a 9mm or 45 ACP aren’t effective need to be invited to stand in front of one. Funny how no one will do so willingly. To play on a saying Both Will Kill

I don’t think Folks here have mentioned that not all 45s are 1911s. I know that’s shocking and not all of us need to carry a zillion rounds. In fact most days, what I carry doesn’t matter as I’m out in the country and the biggest threat is a tick getting on my dog. Anything won’t kill a tick (without insanely good aim and harming my dog) and the reality is my gun will not be fired unless I go to the range.

So, the reality is that I normally carry my XDs45. I carry a smaller 9mm if I’m wearing dress clothes. And If I felt I needed more rounds I can open carry a full size if I like.

I’m pretty sure I’m not atypical with all of the guns sold. So yes 45 is “viable” and not going anywhere anytime soon, but then neither is 9mm. And while 40 S&W is losing popularity in LE there are so many around I’d say it’s not going any place either anytime soon. So all are “viable”.

These comparison discussions come up because people have a certain flavor they like and have a hard time entertaining another mindset. It will happen over and over and over

Either get over it or pay no attention to them.

Well the issue is there is a series of misconceptions going on around here. Flavor would be a good reason to do something because it "works for you"
The problem is that the OP said "viable." Is a .22 viable for hunting deer? Yeah...I guess. It CAN work with the right shot placement...it wouldn't be my first choice. The standard of "viable" is literally that low.
No one has mentioned they don't like the .45 acp because they are limited in the sub-combat option range, or that there may be terminal performance issues in sub-compacts. No one has mentioned different companies issues with defense bullets being advertised to do more then they do. People have mentioned lower magazine sizes, but really? if you have a 9mm with 15 rounds and a glock 21 with 13 rounds....aren't we just being silly for crying over a whopping 2 round difference? Besides...dudes on here shouldn't be trying to get into a 2 hour shoot out where
you need that much ammo anyways..you can't even control your pistols recoil, and if you can't kill someone in 13 rounds....i mean....maybe you should find a good trainer. fiddy cent is alive for a reason.
People have said things about the military, but ,they dont even know what they are talking about. i've never carried SO much .45 acp ammo on me that the weight was any noticeably different than 9mm ammo. In the military. For over a decade. During war. Or training. Period.
The people talking about a 9mm going through body armor better than a .45 acp are just flat out retarded. The end.
Finally the ballistics...in general...are either not worst, or/but usually better than a 9mm....100% of the time.
Flavor would be..."I'm a 5'1 midget, the only gun that doesn't print out of my clothes when I appendix carry is my Ruger LCP9." The narration...whether its a personal reason or not, has reasoning behind it of some type...even if it makes no sense to you.
Problem is...like i said before...you wont hear about those reasons....like "I suck, I can't handle long push recoil, hence why I shoot 9mm."
That's why there is debate. Misconceptions and denial. And the word "viable."

Well the MK23 is still in service even though people don’t really use it. So I guess all of USSOCOM.
There’s no “which “”special forces””” there is only one special forces and that is the green beanies from the army.
In addition the glock 19 got picked up for authorized use for marine raiders however the m45 is still available.
Thats not including if the individual just brings what he wants.

With SOCOM and MARSOC both formally adopting the G19 as their go to pistol, my guess is that the Mk23 will be sent down to the bush league...and eventually getting phased out of service in very short order.

Well they been renewing the contracts with the mk23. The m45 is still new and still used by other entities besides Raiders, like recon bn and force, as well as their support entities.
Not only that but there’s a constant political agenda all the time following different trends.
When that happens, I just bring my own. When you get to a command that stops that, there are still ways to deviate if you feel strongly about it, which a lot of people don’t because it’s just a handgun we are talking about. It’s not going to make or break a mission readiness.
In NSW the sig was the “adopted” weapon before the glock. People still use what they need.

Thankfully, my local cops think that both 45 ACP and 9mm are viable for their purposes.

I just wish that more of these folks shot 45 ACP...I pick up the brass they leave at my local range, and I've got PLENTY of 9mm, but would like more 45 ACP!
