We HAMMERED the hogs at the Shiloh Ranch in Oklahoma using our .45 caliber airguns!

All with one shot DRT's, though a foot was still twitching on Jim's hog after he had reloaded, so he gave him a "just to be sure" shot LOL!

We took hogs that weighed between 80-140lbs.

Starting with my meat-hog sized boar, the smallest taken at about 80lbs, and the headwound from the 226grain SWC that dropped him where he stood like he had been pole-axed. Followed by the rest of the guys and their hogs!

.45 caliber "airguns"?! Who manufacturers those. I've never heard of them. Interesting.

Thanks,

Nice!

I'm waiting for Dennis Quackenbush to get caught up and open ordering again.

And waiting, and waiting.

Pre-charged, pneumatic airguns offer some impressive ballistics. I'm currently awaiting machined parts, barrel, etc for a .25 caliber that will deliver 31-to-42-grain pellets at the 1,000 fps mark with fpe in the neighborhood of 100. That's impressive out of a "pellet gun." A .45 or .50 will likely follow . . . nice job on the bacon-bearers . . . and they're unGodly accurate!

Mine? Dead-quiet in .22 (which I already have) & the .25 should be the same. The big bores? I would imagine rather like shooting a powder-burner.

Great shots.

If Obama outlaws my smokeless and charcoal guns, I may be playing with air power someday.

Has never happened that way anywhere else similar to us, not sure why you think it would here.
In the UK, Canada, and Australia they have limitations making them more restricted than firearms here.
In the UK 12 foot pounds is the legal limit (6 for pistols) before it is the same as other firearms, less than many common .177 and .22 caliber airguns sold here.

In Australia an unlicensed unregistered pellet/BB pistol is the same as having an unlicensed firearm, a serious offense.

In Canada they have major limitations as well. Anything over 500 FPS and 4.2 foot pounds is a firearm.

So I think it is fair to say that based on most of the nations we have the most in common with that have followed the path of gun control, if firearms were on the chopping block, airguns would be quick to follow. You would not be switching from one to the other.

If it is not legal for you to have the powder burner don't expect anything different with an airgun.
In fact as soon as firearms have been severely restricted/banned in such places a tidal wave of legislation to clean up other items has followed. From airguns, to bows and crossbows, to swords and knives and a host of other things.

Firearms really are the front line and have the largest organized opposition to restrictions. Once they go most other things follow suit within a couple years or are classified as firearms themselves.

GUNTECH, Dennis Quakenbush opened his order list again to accept 50 orders for rifles a couple months ago. I believe it was open for a whopping 3 hours before he got all 50 guns accounted for.

Noise on the bigbore .45's is around a .22LR with a much different sound and no sonic crack.

I've shot projectiles as big as 285grains in my modified SamYang 909, but 260grains is as much slug as that rifle design can make any use of and still have a usefull trajectory IMO. I like using slugs around 180-230grains.

One of the guys on the hunt had a DAQ.457 that was shooting 375grainer flat points at around 780fps! Man did that go through that hogs skull like a hot knife through butter!!

From how far away? I keep reading about those, but no one seems to say at what range they are using them, and I'm really curious. What would you say is the effective range on a 150 lb hog with that air rifle?

I'm still waiting for the rifle manufacturers to bring electromagnetic rail guns to the market. They can launch a projectile at figures close to 20,000 FPS. :) Literally a grain of sand can blow a .5" hole through 1" armor plate steel.

As far as effective range goes, I would say between bowhunting and hand-gunning range. Usually about 50-75yards. I like to keep my shots at 50yards and less but it has power out to 75+.

I shot this hog at a range of 20 yards or so give or take a little. I know one guy that killed a 145lb. boar with a body shot using a 255grainer with a .32 meplat using an air-rifle a good bit more powerful than my own; shot it at about 35 yards, and it ran 50 yards before going down.

When did we start patterning our laws after other countries? Anything can happen, have to have an open mind for the alternatives. I can't shoot a bow worth a toot do to eye dominance, but there are crossbows, too. :D Of course, I may have to go underground and make my own caps (do already) and gunpowder (not TOO hard to do) and screw uncle Sam if it came to that. Where there's a will, there's a way.

At close range, that energy would be effective, I guess, but I personally avoid .45ACP for hogs or deer and prefer magnum revolvers for my handgun hunting, or my hot .45 Colt loads. It CAN be done, but to me, this would sort of be a stunt. I'll stick with airless. Some folks just seem to be really enamored with usng air guns, though, and more power to 'em. Just gotta get closer. That's not really hard to do with hogs. Most shots are inside 50 yards when you get one.

MCgunner, I have killed a corsican ram and this hog using my modded .45 909. For thin-skinned stuff it works great out to 50-75 yards, but for shots to vitals on mature hogs I need a bit more power than what I have in this particular air rifle (though I believe it to be ideal for clean heart/lung shots on deep woods Blacktail Deer in Oregon).

Jim's air rifle is much more powerful than mine, and did a bang-up job on the both sides of the head of the hog he shot with a 390 grainer going 750+fps, I know which airgun I'd rather be running around 300lb. wild hogs with. That's a lot of flat-nose bullet!
I believe his rifle is optimized by the maker (DAQ) to shoot something more in the 425grain range.

Soon enough I will have a similar air rifle to hunt with that is optimized for slugs in the 260-300grain range. Also looking at a 20gauge air shotgun that will likely sling 400grain, slugs at over 800fps (THAT will be my specialized rig for still-hunting wild hogs!) and also shoots shot loads for hunting small game and waterfowl where legal.

For now I will enjoy the 909 air rifle I have for what I consider to be it's ideal purpose; shooting nutria all year long, and calling in the coyote in the winter.

Butcher, very cool... can you tell us..

-How come use airguns? Only thing allowed on the ranch? Or just cause you guys like them?

-Can you run down the other airguns used by everyone besides the SamYang 909?

-Did anyone take a vitals-shot, or head shots only?

Thanks. Nice hogs! :)

This reminds me of why I like hunting & hunters...I went fishing with my brother and nephews over the weekend, and my brother actually wanted to throw the fish back - called it "catch and release" or some such nonsense. :p I brought the ones I caught home and had a fish fry on Sun!

Now THAT is interesting to me! I have this huge field behind my house and trees right behind the fence. There's white wing dove by the hundreds, but I'm inside the city limits.......hmmmmmm....:D Wonder how loud that 20 gauge is? :D
