45 colt and POI

I was shooting at 15 yards and could not get the poi down . With the rear sights down all the way was still 2or 3 inchs high. I was shooting Win. cowboy loads for the first time. A 250 gr. bullet.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk with a 7.5 in. barrel that's been accurate with normal 255 gr loads. Will the light load 250 gr. make that kind of difference, or was I having a bad hair day? I never thought that these loads would be that much off, so I didn't bring any of the normal 255 gr loads .

I'm new to reloading .45 colt. My experience is that slower heavier bullets print higher. My reasoning is usually flawed. I think if it takes longer for the bullet to get out of the barrel the recoil affects it more. I have Rugers in 5.5 and 4 5/8". If my reasoning is sound, your longer barrel will be affected more.

Is your Blackhawk stainless or blued? If it's stainless you can remove the front blade and replace it with a higher one. If the revolver is blued you can't, as the blade is part of the ramp.

At 15 yards the bullet's trajectory is going up. I suspect that at 50 yards point-of-impact will be closer to point-of-aim.

It's a stainless steel made around 92 or 93. Would the taller sights be from Ruger or just after market? That maybe just what I need. As I'm going to try my hand at reloading and will be trying to use some light loads. But really would like to get in to the 900 to 1000 fps range too.

Heavier bullets do print higher. Increase your velocity and it will print lower.

Your 7½" Blackhawk can be fitted with the blade for a 4 5/8" model, which is the tallest front sight blade Ruger makes.

Well you're in luck...

I would start by contacting Ruger's Customer Service Department first. If that doesn't work a new blade wouldn't be hard to make. Aftermarket sight blades are available, but no names come to my mind at the moment. Perhaps Google is your friend.
