.45 Colt Loads? (not ruger only, but not light)

I'm the proud owner of a new S&W 25 mountain gun in .45 colt. I have researched this platform and know it will handle "warm" loads. I have a ruger bisley for heavy stuff. I'd like to drive a 255-260grn lead bullet at 950--1000fps out of the 4" barrel. I'd also like to use the Hornady XTP 250grn or 300 grn bullets at a warm level.

These loads will be my "walking in the woods" loads. Most of the time I'll be running 255 grn lead bullets over moderate charges of win. 231.

I have win. 231 and LiL'gun on hand for powders. Any help or links to info would be appreciated.

I will share one that I found last night. My wife picked up a copy of Taffin's Big Bore Handguns book on overstock.com for me for Christmas. I'd not read the chapter on .45 colt when I posted.

Warning: the following load is above the recommended load and may result in an unsafe load in your guns.

Taffin indicates a load of 8.0grns Win 231 will drive a 255grn lswc at 935 fps out of his S&W 25.

I'm particularly interested in data for LiL'gun, as it seems to work on a lower pressure curve. Does anyone know if reducing loads with lil'gun will result in the dangers of detonation that you have to worry about with w296/h110?

8-9 grains of Unique very accurate, stiff recoil at 9 grains in my vaquero.

I also tried Universal clays but found it to be just as dirty as Unique, but much less accurate.

250 grain LFP bullet, starline case, win large pistol primer, and a good roll crimp.

Blaster, I seem to get a tad better accuracy from Universal but it could just be my shooting or the load I use most. I use 8.5 grs of either one in my Blackhawk and realy have no complaints with either. Might get just a bit more velocity from Universal with that load. You're gonna get some "dirty" from each one.

An old Hornady reloading manual has a recipe for S & W #25 that has a max of about 1000 FPS using Win 296 powder and 250 gr bullets. I've tried it but the 296 is so foul burning, my revolver gets too crudded up to function after about 25 rounds.

Proceed with due caution: My 25-5 likes this. Do work up, its right on the bottom of Ruger & TC... 13.0 grn of Blue Dot, WW LP, Home cast 250 grn WFN, molyplated, Lyman's moly bullet lube. Around 950 fps from my 4".
