So a buddy of mine inherited a .460 S&W. He wanted to experiment with light under penetrating loads with high energy. I wasn't sure. Could you get a 170 grain solid copper round to reach 3000fps out of the 460 S&W hand-loading?

Follow the data in newer loading books!!!!!! Those foolish enough to load hand grenades tend to loose body parts that can't be replaced. If he does try that let me know where he is shooting so I make sure I'm NOT THERE!

:confused::confused:
Why?

How would a 170 grain projectile going 3,000 fps be "under penetrating"??

A 200 gr bullet can go around 2,300 fps so I doubt it.

Probably not, depends on barrel length. If it's a 20" Encore, maybe. I've been loading for the .460 for a decade. It is not the caliber a newbie wants to experiment with.

Maybe he thinks something like this will blow up and stop shallow?

But they claim the core will keep going... :banghead:

IME, Hornady's factory 200 gr SST is fragile enough that one really does not have to worry about deep penetration. I used it once for deer. Never again. If the OP's buddy wants a high velocity, lightweight handgun round, he should trade that .460 in for a T.C. Encore or Contender in .223. A .45 caliber handgun is not the platform for a beginner to seek out 3000 fps. If the "buddy" does not know this, he needs to step away from the reloading bench and rethink.
