5.56 ballistics from a 24 inch barrel?

Well, I was going to link you to AR15 ammo oracle, but it showed up as a malicious website. I would just google it and see what I came up with.

I don't know the ballistics but my RRA varminter with 24" barrel will shoot lights out with 69-75 grain bullets. It's a 1-8 twist heavy barrel that is so heavy, it just doesn't seem to move on the bench. That is also the only place that I will take it because of the weight. I think a 20" barrel would work just as good. I recently put together an 18" SPR that I really LOOOVE. Sorry for not having any ballistics.:(

I use the following "match" load in my 24" 1:8 fluted heavy barrel (DPMS).

77gr SMK HPBT
24.5gr IMR 4895
CCI 400 primer
Winchester case
Avg. Vel. 2,770 fps

Same components above but +/- 0.3gr of powder:

24.2gr
Avg. Vel. 2,750 fps.

24.8gr
Avg. Vel. 2,790 fps

I just picked up 9lb of Varget so I'll be working up a new load with the same components but different powder.

:)

Does anyone know of ballistics data of various 5.56 loads from a 24 inch barrel?
Yes I do....I shoot a Remington bolt action with a 24" barrel.
What particular ballistics data were you interested in. I doubt I have all there is to have. :)

I'm mainly looking to see how much one will gain by going up to a 24 inch barrel from a 20 using common loads. A range buddy claimed to have clocked his standard 62 grainers at 3450fps coming out of his Bushmaster varminter, which seems pretty amazing.

I "think" your buddy is full of it. I` have 2 26" bbl`ed 223 and don`t reach those velocities safely.
I`d expect the general velocity change to be around 20-25 fps per inch. The exact load, rifle, and total bbl lenght will cause it to vary some but it is usually fairly close. I would feel safe saying you can expect ~75 fps difference from 20" to 24".

I've gotten over 3400 fps shooting 40 grain bullets and 3031, but couldn't get more than 3100 with my usual varmint 52 grainers. I think a switch to 4895 would have made 3200 but I never tried it. That was always out of a 24" barreled rifle I used for doggies.

I think claims of over 300 -3100 with 62 grain bullets may be looked at suspiciously. Bullet weight affects the little guys more than bigger cartridges.
