I'm the firearms historian for a state museum. Man asked to see me with firearms questions. Said his father was in failing health and he wanted to know the best way of selling dad's collection, some guns worth $50,000. People assume that any old gun is worth a lot of money, so I was skeptical until he showed pictures. Oh my! Gold plated and engraved Winchester 1866. Early engraved and pristine Henrys. Engraved Colt Single Action Army. I'm a member of the Winchester Arms Collectors Association, so I can hook him up with individual collectors and auction sites that specialize in high end guns. Wish I could see the firearms in person, but he is two states away.

Thought others might be interested in how my Friday played out.

Yeah, he needs to hook up with Rock Island or Dan Morphy's--both sell some high dollar items and the bidders seem to have deep pockets--especially Rock Island. I see where RIA is opening a new auction facility in Texas. They had to abandon Illinois sooner or later due all the restrictions that keep getting passed.

I got the impression you only looked at the photos but don't actually have them.

Correct?

Is there any way you can hook up with the guy again and show them here?

As one of the premium gun sites, it might help his evaluation and marketing efforts to have folks here make comments and who knows, maybe even make offers.

I'm sure Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons would love to look them over.

I gave him contact information for those two sites and a few others. In the recent WACA publication Poulin Auctions ad showed sales of four Winchesters from $24k to $78K.

Yes, he had the pictures on his phone. He was grateful for my assistance and mentioned he intended to get better pictures. I will ask him if he is willing to share those when he has them.

Fascinating thread going here. Thanks for posting and keep us updated. Looking forward to seeing some of that high dollar stuff. I can dream; can't I?

I wonder if the old man will get to breath his last before the son's greed kicks in.

Hard to know motivation. My dad is on hospice and he is asking me to do many things for him. It might sound like some as greed on my behalf to others. A lot have to do with money or estate, but I am following his instructions to the letter. It could be the son is just following his dad's wishes. I prefer my dad over his things.

I can't wait to see some of the items that might be in this man's collection. It's like he has his own museum.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I went thru the same with my dad a few years back. Because he had enough monies to live out his days and to bury him, while we did talk about how to dispose of the estate, we did not actively do any until after hos death, out of respect. Just didn't feel right. Dad didn;t have any big dollar guns, he just wanted all his guns passed on to his sons. My sisters did not like this, and some of the sister in laws made dad's guns past tense in their homes once obtained. In my post I said I hoped the dad got to breath his last before greed showed up. Hopefully in this case and in yours, it will never show up. I never thought it would in mine......

That's a strange take on the situation. Why would you assume that? I did not get those vibes from the son. Not about greed, about having the money to care for dad and mom. I know from personal experience how expensive end-of-life care is for the elderly. The son is a credentialed professional law enforcement officer with a federal agency, not some trailer park meth head.

We ought to have a rule around here, about thread titles like this and no pics!
The owner had a few cell phone pictures. He says he will send me detailed shots when he can. The guns are with his parents, a couple of states away from his home. Stay tuned.

a museum sounds like the right place for them. he might think the are worth more than they are actually worth, but sounds like they are really nice just the same.
