.500 balls?

Okay, posted pics in the "Firearms Research" section, of the fired-in-anger "PB" rifle. Talk about a thread hi-jack! We took that airplane to CUBA! (and got some cigars)

I'm guessing, but back in the early 80s I made up a " chunk gun " with a 54cal, 1 1/8" across the flats, 48" long Bill Large barrel. He cherried out a mold to .542. With .020 patching I had to beat the ball down the barrel about 5" with a brass short starter. I don't think it was real round any more, but at 60 yards [ the distance shot for chunk guns ] it would print one on top of another. So the .500 ball is probably for 50 cal guns that guys target shoot with and like real tight fitting ball/patch combinations. Bill liked em tight. He was quite the re-noun shooter back in his day. They would shoot for the best cuts on a side of beef. He said one day guys were complaining about him being there so he picked up his chunk of log and took 15 big steps backwards. He still won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. He gave away the 2nd and 3rd choices.
