Planning on purchasing a S&W 500 Magnum and plan to reload for it. I'm noticing load data that uses large pistol magnum, large rifle and large rifle magnum primers.

Are all of these primers compatible with .500 Mag brass, or are there shells for each primer type?

If your brass used small pistol primers you must use them or modify your brass for large rifle. All new brass is for large rifle primers.

Thank for you for the feed back. I only managed to find a few online stores that specified the primer type for the brass, originally left me somewhat suspicious.

Click & read the link in post #2.

It totally explains the whole mess.

All current .500 S&W cases use LR primers.

^^^^^^ This: Large RIFLE primers ^^^^^^

(or you will be eating combustion gases in short order)

I have close to 550 pieces of brass for my 500 mag, all bought from people as once fired. or what I was told was once fired..... not always the case..... anyway I have been buying it for the past few years every time I see 50 or a hundred come up. I have yet to see a piece with a small rifle pocket. so they are not as common as people think. also any new production brass from starline is going to take large rifle primers. If I remember correctly the brass wasn't made that long with the small pockets. get some H110 and start blowing fireballs the size of a beach ball!! it's a blast to shoot.

There will be an "R" on the headstamp if you are to use large rifle primers.

Large pistol primer 500 brass hasn't been manufactured in many years.

When I first process the OF brass I will ream the LP primer pockets to be sized for LR primers. There have been very few LP primed brass pass through my dies to date though. Never had one with SR primers yet. Those might be good to put away in case LR primers go missing in the future.
