I have a .54 cal Hatfield that I got at Auction Arms.
Item # 5859288. If you check the site out, you can see the rifle
has a crack in the toe. My question is, how can I repair this crack,
or stop it from expanding.

Hi Paul,

I'd use high viscosity (runny) Acraglas myself. If I'm working on a stock and it starts or appears to have parts that may chip, I apply a little SuperGlue, let it set and continue working. Clamp it immediately after you apply it. You want it compressed so that the crack is near invisible.

If the toe came off, I'd fit a wafer (flat piece of wood with an outline of a football) between the two pieces and then glue it. One fellow's gorgeous flintlock pistol broke at the grip right after the 3rd shot. We were all disappointed as he had labored so hard and had done such an excellent job. Well, that's how he patched it and he brought it back the next year. His repair was so well done that the fissure was barely discernable (and you had to know where to look).
