I picked one up today at Big 5 ($339), and had some questions about it.

On the sticker on the stock, it says it has a heavier barrel, but it looks to me like it's the same thickness as my 500 PGO. I know there's different models of 590s, so do some of them just have a regular thickness barrel? Mine only has a bead sight instead of the ghost ring sight also.

What kind of bayonet will fit this thing? I got two mosins recently, and after sticking them in the ground with the bayonet with the bolt pulled out of it to spray windex down the barrel after shooting corrosive ammo, I've decided that bayonets are without a doubt the coolest (and most pointless) accessory you can put on a gun. I probably won't leave the bayonet on my 590, but I would like to dress up in camo and take pictures with it like I'm a ninth degree black belt mall ninja or something.

What's a good sling for this gun? I noticed that the factory sling swivel sticks out just a little bit past the muzzle, which kinda bothers me in a way. Midway sells some sort of sling mount adapter kit, but I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I don't have to have any sort of super tactical gimmick sling or anything, but I would like one that's more useful than some el cheapo sling from walmart.

How much of a hassle is it to put a side saddle ammo holder on? The ones from Mesa Tactical have pretty poor reivews for their mossberg shell holders, and they're pricey too. Is there a better (cheaper) brand, and are they worth the cost?

Is the speedfeed stocks any more comfortable than the factory stock? I haven't shot my 590 yet, but the stock fits me perfectly, and is way more comfortable than I expected. I've always liked guns with pistol grips, as they seem to be more accurate and comfortable, but I'm not sure if my 590's factory stock can be improved upon. How many of you find aftermarket stocks with pistol grips to be more comfortable than the factory stock?

And my final question is; Is the Mossberg 590 not the baddest shotgun ever made or what, because it sure looks and feels like it. Saigas might be more imposing, street sweepers might be more rare, and the SPAS-12 might be more famous, but I have yet to handle a gun that made me feel so much like shooting chipmunks and milk jugs as I do when I hold my 590. I'm sure that feeling will wear off after I bruise the crap out of my shoulder by shooting slugs and buckshot through it, but until then, I'm pretty sure I'm in love.

Theres the 590 and the 590A1. Only the A1 had the heavy bbl. It also has a metal trigger housing and safety.

Standard USGI M16 bayonet.

I prefer quick adjust two points in general, but dont have a sling on my 590. If you look at the back of the bayonet lug, there should be a threaded hole for the front sling loop there. I'm not sure, as my bayonet lug was removed to make room for the surefire forend.

Not too much of a hassle to install a side saddle. I used a cheap tac-star. Works well enough for me.

I hate the speedfeed stocks. One, because the pistol grip is about as ergonomic as a 2x4, and two, I'm left handed. With a good weld, that shell holder hurts. Feels like being kicked in the face. I cut about 1.5" out of my factory stock and installed a slip-on youth model limbsaver pad. I dont care much for slip ons, but it was the only one I found to fit it. I later stippled the stock with a woodburning pen.

Dont know if I would go so far as to call it the baddest SG made, but I like mine. I put about 50 3" 15 pellet 00B through it one day, and after that, recoil doesnt bother me that much. Well, that day wasnt so bad, but the day after was. Now it just feels like a deep tissue massage.

Post a pic of the stippling if you have one. I softened the sharp molded edges of my stock 590 butt grip with some sandpaper and it helped, but it's still slippery as heck.

Unless it says 590A1 on the receiver it does not have the heavy barrell, etc. Most gun store salesmen don't know the difference between the 590 and 590A1. I personally don't think a heavy barrell is of any realistic benefit although the metal safety is an improvement.

There are two things working against me here. First, my camera sucks. Second, the guy behind it is no Oleg.

The stippling looks like crap, but it does provide a better grip. I used the chisel tip on the woodbrning pen since it did great on my Glock grip. I think a soldering iron (with the pointed tip) may do better on the mossberg stock, but I dont wanna go through that again. I burned my fingertips countless times, and its a time consuming process.

Did you get this 590?

-heavy/heavier barrel. I've never weighed or measured the thicknesses of Mossberg's barrels. It seems as if the heavy barreled models are Parkerized. The Parkerized barrel models come in various 500, 590, & 590A1 Mossberg models. Mossberg's numberings don't always make sense, as often there are exceptions to its model lines.

-bayonets. From what I've seen, the M9 bayonet seems to fit the straightest on the Mossberg. Others, such as the M7, will fit, but always seems to a bit of an upward tilt.

-slings. This is a personal choice. I prefer a relatively standard 2-point sling of some type. If Mossberg still has a threaded hole in the back/bottom of its bayonet lug, it'll be possible to thread a sling stud into that hole instead of getting a sling adapter plate to screw under the mag tube cap. Otherwise, using the mag tube cap-mounted stud shouldn't be a problem.

-side saddles. I've been using the Tacstar brand side saddles for years without problems. They're easy to install, although a bit of Loctite in the right places can help ensure certain mounting screws don't loosen at inopportune moments. I use both 4 & 6 round versions, but I do like the 4 shell version more as I don't seem to bump into the side saddle as much when cycling the forend.

-Speedfeed stocks. This is a brand with several models & I've used most of them. Fit is most important. Having extra shells in the stock is nice to have as shotguns already have limited (read relatively low) ammo capacity, but not all Speedfeed stocks have this feature. Some people prefer a pistol-grip incorporated into the full-length stock (Speedfeed III, IV). I've found shooting a pistol gripped shotgun all day with a pistol grip aggravates my wrist and detracts from my accuracy when shooting slugs vs. a straight stock.

Speedfeed uses a nice polymer of some sort and it's just different from other synthetics, but not better, although it is a fine quality stock. Here's a link to a company which probably sells the full line from Speedfeed: http://www.arizonagunrunners.com/Products/SpeedFeed/speedfeed.html

After looking, mine is just the regular 590 without the heavy barrel. I'm not home right now, but I'll try and post a pic of it tomorrow when I get back.

I finally shot it a few days ago. It actually kicked more than I expected it to. My only other 12ga shotguns is a cut down NEF with no recoil pad, and a Mossberg 500 PGO/6 shot/18.5" barrel, so I expected the 590 to recoil like a BB gun after shooting those brutes.

I still love this shotgun though, and if I had known how cheap the base 590 could be had for, I would've never bought the PGO.

I plan on adding a bunch of crap to my 590 (sling, bayonet, side saddle, cup holder, MP3 player, cigarette lighter, etc.), but I still want to save up and get a 930 SPX eventually too.

"I plan on adding a bunch of crap to my 590 (sling, bayonet, side saddle, cup holder, MP3 player, cigarette lighter, etc.).........."

Creep, I here ya!

Makes me giggle when PPL talk about the Heavy BBL. Most PPL (people) stick so much crap on them it out weighs the weight difference.

If you want to try a fun load I recommend Wincheater X'press OO magnum's.

.

the way i understood it (and i may be wrong) but the A1 doesnt have a heat shield (easiest way to tell) the barrel is too thick for the one thats on the standard 590

i think they are the baddest shotgun on the market but then again im partial because im an owner of one lol

anyone try the OKC3S bayonet its the replacment the marines are using for the M9 figure if the M9 fits the OKC3S should and its a bigger meaner bayo

as for accessories the only thing i got on mine is the speedfeed that came on it but its a standard style not a pistol grip and i dont even use it really

Zack S or anyone that knows

I have a quick question for you.

I have been looking (drooling) at a 590 and I would like to put a Surefire forend on it.

How hard is it to remove the bayonet lug?

Does it somehow unbolt or just break out the grinder and sand paper?

I've owned a few 500's but I very have limited knowledge of the 590.
Thanks Mongo:confused:

Mongo, it doesn't unbolt.

I used a 4" angle grinder with a 120 grit flap disc. Didn't take it down as fast as it would have if I used a stone, but I didnt have to smooth it out before I touched it up.

I touched up the bare metal with some Duplicolor bumper and trim touch up paint. Its a pretty good match to the anodizing on my AR lowers, but not the parkerizing.

As far as telling the difference between the A1 and its cheaper brother, the A1 has a metal trigger group housing and safety, and it has 590 A1 stamped into the side of the receiver, the left side IIRC.

The 590 has the plastic parts from the cheaper 500 and the rollmark is on the bottom of the receiver, just like the 500.

Thanks for the info-from the looks of the picture it seemed as though it would be a carefully grind, file metal modification. Then doctor the bare metal.

I like the 590's but have more use for a forearm light than the bayonet lug.

Thanks again!
Mongo

why grind a 590 when you can get a 500 pursuader its an 8 shot but im pretty sure if you change the follower to a 590 itll hold that 9th shell and it wont have all the bells and whistles like bayo lug heat shield all that and its about 100 bux cheaper too

Mainsail - my 590is set up like yours (minus the toad sticker and sling). Where did you get your sling?
thanks

I took my dremel to the bayo lug, took about 20 minutes to cut it off and touch up the bare metal...same as a few above, i'd rather have the light than the bayonet...:)

surefire has a mount that i believe works with the bayo lug.

they offer 4 for the 500/590
2 note you need to remove the lug
the other 2 do not, and have photos of the forend on a 590 w/ lug

Just a thought; if you want to make your gun "tacticool" , have fun. If you want a working shotgun I would suggest the following:
1. use a butt cuff instead of a side saddle, it does not unbalance the weapon as much and can easily be removed, and a sidesaddle on an alloy receiver can easily be over tightened, and easily shoot loose-thus inviting overtightening.
2. I like the speedfeed with the shell holder, gives you 4 extra unobtrusive rounds.
3. Any M16 bayonet will fit your weapon.
4. For a pump gun, I just do not like the pistol grips, changes your angle of grip, puts your hands in opposing planes for weapon retention, and unless you have a hand injury does not buy you much-I know they are popular, just MHO. For a semi auto a PG stock may make some sense, maybe.

I have a 590A1 and really like it, only add ons are a QD sling with shell loops, it has the speed feed with the 4 extra rounds, giving me plenty of ammo for any non-zombie scenario. AND it does not look like I am a kill crazy wannabe in the unfortunate event I actually use it for SD. My real HD SG is very non threatening looking and very PC, but just as deadly.
