I took 2 deer with my custom 6.5 creedmoor ar10 this past Arkansas rifle season. A doe @ 140yds and a buck @ 295yds

The 6.5 is proving to be quite good at taking down game. An AR10 is a heavier rifle than I'd want to carry where I hunt, but the AR platform is growing on me as a hunting tool. I'm considering one in 6.5 Grendel.

The more I've read about the 6.5 CM, and talking to guys who are really doing some great work with it at long range- I'm starting to wish I bought my Ruger American predator in that caliber instead of the 308 I got.

Yeah but.......

While the 6.5 CM is a great round when you compare it to a .308 Win in real life hunting situations and at realistic hunting range. It’s more of the classic case of Cooper’s classic “preoccupation with inconsequential increments” than any real life advantage.

Can you dumb that down for simpletons like me please? Lol

Thanks guys! Funny how I took him, I was on an afternoon rifle hunt here in Arkansas and I was over looking 2 fields with a max shot of about 500yds. Had a bad day, Hadn't seen a deer except for 2 does when I first arrived. So I was a little frustrated and decided to leave with about 10ish minutes of shooting light left. I could easily see my truck a 1/4 mile away, put my rifle on my shoulder and began walking. About halfway to my truck, I looked back to my left in a direction I have never ever seen a deer in years of hunting these fields. Looked through my scope and saw it was a buck. I immediately put my rifle on it's prone bipod and ranged the deer, twice. It's 294 and 295 yds. Dialed my vortex razor and got down behind the rifle. Yelled twice with the meh sound to get him to stop walking and poked him right behind the shoulder. He ran about 75yds and piled up in the field! YES!

I love it when that happens!

Don't. .308 is a very accurate and capable medium to long range caliber, it just requires a bit more precise ranging and bullet drop calculation than the CM and only at the very extremes it may fall short. Of all the shots I've decided not to take with .308 most have been firmly in .338 Lapua territory and while the CM definitely offers some advantage, I'm not sure it would've boosted my confidence enough for a different decision.

On the other hand, not having one yet is a perfect excuse next time you're sure you absolutely "need" another rifle. ;)
