This was asked of me, and I am woefully unqualified to answer, so all help is appreciated...

"I have an AR-15 chambered in .223, so in considering an alternative upper for this rifle, would you go with 6.5mm Grendel or 6.8mm Remington SPC?"

It depends on how the shooter wants to use it.

For shooting in excess of 300 yards, the 6.5 Grendel will hold a flatter trajectory. The downside is the relative scarcity of companies making barrels and mags and ammo for the chambering.

The 6.8SPC is much better supported in the marketplace and has excellent performance inside of 300 yards. The shorter bullets suitable for use in the 6.8SPC don't have the aero efficiency of the long 6.5mm designs, and so the 6.8SPC tends to suffer from more velocity loss and trajectory drop past 300 yards relative to the 6.5 Grendel.

For most folk looking for hunting or social uses inside of 300 yards, the 6.8SPC will be a better choice due to its broader market acceptance. For folks looking for a unique chambering that has long legs, the 6.5 Grendel is the better choice.

This was just asked and answered a week ago or so.

rbernie got it right. They are two sides of the same coin. Both are niche product categories right now. Both will do an excellent job inside of 300 yards and their ballistics/trajectories are nearly identical.

6.8 SPC is better supported in the market because of Remington's involvement. It may have a very slight edge in reliability due to the case taper in full auto arms (but that is yet to be proven as far as I can tell).

6.5 Grendel starts to shine at longer ranges with better retained velocities and flatter trajectories. Alexander Arms has shot itself in the foot by restricting licensing...it should have learned its lesson from many other industries that the way to get a new niche product accepted is to get as many vendors signed up as possible.

I personally went for the 6.5 Grendel because I want a long range round first, a CQB second and intend to use it for hunting as well. I'm also a very big fan of the 6.5mm bullet. I have a 24" Overwatch upper that is a DMR type setup. I'm in process of building a 16" Dissapator style upper right now.

I wouldn't feel underarmed with a 6.8 SPC, however. In fact, I very well may get an upper for kicks.

Great response, folks. I'll pass it along. Many thanks!

(Mod - - FWIW, I googled www and searched THR, but couldn't see the forest for the trees. This thread made my life much easier, and apologies if it gave you heartburn. Not sure what the best solution for everyone might be, but I know where you're coming from with the duplicate thread mess, and did make the effort you requested.)
