With the advent of AR-type rifles chambered in the Remington 6.8mm SPC, and now 6.5mm Grendel, I have been wondering whether any advantages (or disadvantages) are created over the now decades-old chambering in Remington .223/5.56mm NATO in terms of barrel life. Of course, while the traditional chambering is hotter (even significantly so), the projectiles it employs have vastly less bearing surface compared to the 6.5mm and 6.8mm projectiles employed in these new chamberings.

So what are implications insofar as the stress on barrel bores?
