It's been over two years, but it's finally done. Here is the original post I made on this rifle: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=605965 Final specs for the rifle are a 21" barrel and 8 3/4 lbs. Test fire video is a 900 grain bullet with 160 grains of IMR 4350. Started at 140 grains and worked my way up. Haven't had a chance to chronograph it yet, but my gunsmith said that the 140 grain load he tested did 1700 fps.

Recoil is stout, looks like...but not the hardest recoiling gun I've seen

Add about 10 lbs of weight to that rifle and I might try it...

Btw, a 900gr bullet at 1700fps comes out to a bit over 5700 ft-lbf energy!

Been having trouble with tyrannosaurs lately?

:D

Doesn't eh 458 Weatherby magnum approach 10,000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy?

My 460 Weatherby maxes out with a 500 grain bullet at 2,600 fps for about 7,500 ft-lbs of energy.

Starting load for the 600 Overkill did 1700 fps and I've added 20 grains of powder on top of that. Hopefully I can get to the range soon and chronograph the hotter load.

The other thing to think about is that the recoil energy of a max load for the 460 Weatherby is 110 ft-lbs. Starting load for the 600 Overkill is 160 ft-lbs.

Ahh, my favorite cartridge (on paper; I've never shot one)! Good looking rifle, too.

In the words of Hannibal on the A-Team movie: "overkill, my friend, is underrated." :D

I can generate near the same recoil from my 18" SxS coachgun with a 3 1/2" slug that produces near 5000 ft lbs. Loaded hot is another story.

Since someone just had to do it:

Working from a 8.75 lb rifle, a 900 gr bullet, 1700 fps velocity and 140 gr of powder, the calculation yields:

Recoil impulse (lbs-sec): 9.27
Recoil Velocity (fps): 34.12
Free Recoil (ft/lbs): 158.20

For perspective, the free recoil of a 375 H&H is about 35 ft/lbs.

It makes my should hurt just to think about it.

On the other hand, if a zombie mastodon takes up residence in your vicinity, you are well prepared to make the critical headshot.
