I have the opportunity to get one gently used for 265. It is the mim and without the lock. would you get yours again or not. please speak form personal experince and not hear-say. thanks for your help.
I really would like to practice a bit more with it, but can't tolerate extended range sessions with it. However, I do have a older 640 in .38 special that I can outfit exactly the same and use it for practice.
The presence of the lock doesn't bother me one bit. Never used it, never paid any mind to it. I don't think I even know where the keys are. I have 3 Taurus handguns with a similar device built-in, never caused me any troubles.
I have a hard chromed 442 so that is kind of like a 642...and yes..I would buy it for that price in a heartbeat...these are baby bear of j-frames...not too heavy and not too light....just right....
and it may well be +p rated....mine is +p rated and is pre-lock, about 3 years old...
I love mine, and wouldn't trade it for the world. Granted I don't practice with it much due to the recoil (in fact it's been over a year since I've fired it) but then with a firearm of that type you really don't need to since it's a close range weapon and at the distances it would be used you'd be hard pressed to miss. Thus far mine has only seen duty during family vacations, since in all of the states we visited it was perfectly legal to carry in the car. Once or twice I've slipped it into the pocket of my robe while answering the door late at night, but I'm not counting that.
Myself, I probably wouldn't. It was a great gun to carry, but I just didn't shoot it that well. I had a Model 36 that I had the same problem with; I don't seem to be able to get on the same page with the J frames, although I've had other small handguns I shot very well (a Glock Model 26 for instance). FWIW....
I got one about 8 months ago. I have had other J-frames but this one is the best so far. I have not tried the 649 but it looks like a winner. I love the snag free design of the 642.
For that price, I would snap it up in a second! Great price on a great gun.
Recoil doesn't bother me one bit and I would even consider a ultra light S&W if they weren't so much more expensive.
