I'm thinking about trading my 4" 66-1 for a 5" 27-2. They are both in really good shape. I baby my 66-1 so it doesn't get much range time with full powered loads, and I just thought it would be fun to have another range and hunting 357 with a little more heft.

Losing a carry gun is not really an issue since I own other 357s I can use for carry: SP, GP, and Security Six.

Do you guys think this is a fair trade? Or is one more valuable than the other?

Thanks in advance.

IMO The M27 is worth more than the M66 if both are the older revolvers before they brought them back in the "Classic Line." The M27 was the Registered Magnum before numbers and is probably the finest .357 Magnum S&W has ever made. I would make the trade for that N frame and feel very good about it!

The 27 is probably worth more in pure $$$, and a nicer finished weapon, not to mention more durable. But for a carry gun, I'd rather have the 66. Now if carry isn't the issue, and it doesn't appear that it is, I would do the trade, if I couldn't just buy the 27 outright.

I would do the trade inasmuch as the Model 27 was S&W's top of the line .357 revolver and the 5" barrel variant is a bit rarer (I think it was discontinued in the late '70s), than the more common length 4" and 6" barrel models.

Why are you still waiting ? Go make the trade! Ive shot the model 27 and now own her sister the model 28, By and Large the best .357 Smith has ever produced , maybe even the best .357 ever(arguably).

In a heartbeat. I have an old 27-2 which is among my most cherished revolvers. A cherry 27 is becoming more and more difficult to find.

Thanks all, I think I'm going to do it.

I will post pics if everything goes through.

I once owned a S&W 66 but eventually sold it. I have an M27 5" that is my pet. Wonderful piece.

Big block or small block Chevy ?

Which one will pass the 10.000 rnds. full house 357 magnum test ?

Who would win Indian Red Lopez, or Larry Holmes ?

I would not hesitate at all about trading a "66" for the wonderful model 27. Especially the 5".

Seems to be a pattern developing here. I'd do that trade without hesitation.

The 5" model 27 is one of the best balanced revolvers around.
You will enjoy it, I'm sure.

In a New York minute. My 5" Model 27-2 is probably one of the better balanced revolvers I own. It has just enough front-end weight.

The Model 27-2 4" lengths are somewhat rare, since they were only made for a few years after the 3.5" and 5" models were discontinued.
