Does anyone have any load data for 68gr HPBT, specifically bolt action. Tempted to use my recipes that I have for the 69 SMK but wanted to ask first.

I started a thread on this subject in Jan of 2019. Member orcon gave me days from hornandy 10th edition for service rifles. Hornandy's 68 hpbt match is a long bullet. He opened coal is 2.250". I used imr 4895 charge weight is between 22.8 and 24.9 gr. Orcon sent by pm pics of data from hornandy 10th edition. There are quite a few powders that work with this bullet listed including blc2.

Hope this helps.

Varget works well with my 68 grain Hornady HPBT bullets. Very accurate rounds fired from my Savage Axis Heavy Barrel and 20” AR. I cannot recall the grains of Varget that I use off the top of my head.

Hope your bolt gun has at least a 1 in 9" rate of twist. If it is an older model, and has a 1 in 12" twist, you are likely to be disappointed with the accuracy of bullets heavier than 60 grains.

I've seen 68's shot from a 1:12 twist... keyholed and patterned like a shotgun at 25yds. In my old 1:9 twist Mini-14, they tore up a business card at 50yds.

23.7 Varget under 75 Horn Match HPBT in my previous barrel, (9 twist)
My current 8 twist barrel really likes the 69 SMK's over a max load of VV 540,,,
The GOOD part about all of this is the 223 isn't really a fussy eater, and there are a lot of good options out there.
Gettin there is half the fun!

I've always used pretty much the same load for all my 68/69 HPBT's. Sierra, Nosler, and Hornady, and never noticed much difference. I used a lot of IMR4895 back in the day, but have been using Varget since about 2003. It isn't temperature sensitive, and I think that meters better than 4895.

I shoot them mostly in AR's but have shot them in a bolt gun with good results. My load was 24.2 or 24.3 IMR4895.
