I have a S&W Model-686, 4" barrel, with a Millet red dot, and BSquare mount and Millet rings. It shoots about 2" low at 15 yards with the adjustments completely raised. Can I shim the front of the sight up to raise the point of impact? If so,how thick should the shim be? Any advise would be greatly apprciated. Thanks.

Not sure about this application, but I've done it many times on other guns. However, with a weaver bases type, I found you usually have to shim the base.
I have also made custom ring shims to correct elevation issues from saran wrap and epoxy when no other option was available.
How much to shim? It's a trial and error, bu I would start with a business card to get in the ball park.

Your post confuses me. Not sure about the Millett, but my Aimpoint sights are not used with a front post sight. If the Millett works like my Aimpoints, the dot is adjusted to make POA/POI coincide without reference to any existing sights. In that case adjust the dot lower, put the dot on the target, and fire. Repeat adjustments until POA/POI coincide. Ignore the factory sights.

I haven't used your particular unit, but to my way of thinking, I would think you would have to shim the rear to raise the point of impact.

Which Bullet/Load?

Ky Larry, what are you shooting? Light bullets at high velocity will shoot lowest, heavier bullets will shoot higher, varying with velocity- the bullet is in the barrel longer (relatively) and as the barrel rises with recoil, the point of impact will rise. I have "adjusted" POI on fixed sighted pistols & revolvers by fiddling with the bullet and velocity. My open-sighted 686 no dash has plenty of adjustment for everything I've shot in it, but I haven't used red dots... Good luck, anyway
Cheers,
George J.

Shim the rear of the base to raise the point of impact.

Shimming the front will make it shot lower.
