In looking at the latest midway flyer it looks like the only reasonable way to get 7.62x54R brass for reloading is to buy privi-partisan ammo and shoot it? (The only brass listed is Norma for over a buck a case) The privi-partisan is cheaper for loaded ammo . . .

Am I missing something?

Dave

S&B makes ammo; their brass is reloadable.

Winchester made a recent run of it.

Lapua makes it as 7.62 x 53R, but it is the same thing.

PRVI Partizan should be fine, too. It seems to me that brass is avaiable under their name or from Graf & Sons as Graf brass.

Winchester brand 7.62x54R is a seasonal run.

Graf's brand 7.62x54R is imported. You'll have to call them if they are out of stock to find out when they expect more.

Lapua is pretty easy to get. It's just more expensive. I bought a box to reload for my Finnish M39 VKT barrel. Excellent brass as is all Lapua brass.

I believe Graf's brass is Starline.......but, that's just my guess. I bought a batch several years ago in that caliber and it has performed quite well. Did have to wait a bit for delivery tho!

Thanks guys! I never thought to check Graf's! Those prices are much more in line with what I was looking for.

Have a good one,
Dave

I'm pretty sure Grafs headstamped brass is not Starline, unless Starline is also foreign made. A year or two ago, when Grafs branded 7.5x55 and 7.62x54R brass was out-of-stock, Grafs was informing the backorder customers that brass would "clear customs" at a certain date.

But Grafs brass is pretty good stuff. I've got a few hundred pieces in 7.5x55. Saved me the time and effort of obtaining Winchester brand .284 Winchester brass and necking it down.

I noticed that they don't sell Grafs branded brass anymore in either 7.62x54R or 7.5x55. I assume the PRVI brass now in their catalog is the same brass, except PRVI headstamped.

Grafs brass is a good choice in this caliber. Is headstamped Grafs. Neat.

Something I've noticed with this particular cartridge is the huge variations in the length of the chambers. Since it headspaces on the rim, the depth of the chamber is not quite so critical. As a result, you will typically see that your shoulders are blown forward quite a distance. Every Mosin Nagant I've owned has exhibited this, as did a PSL.

Of course, when you FL size these cases, the shoulders are set back again. I do not know how many times this cycle can repeat before problems arise, but if you have a little extra $$ laying around, go to CH Tool and Die and have a custom sizing die manufactured for your particular rifle. All they need is a phone call to let them know it is coming, and 3 fired cases from your rifle.

FWIW.

I don't know if it's a good approach or not, but my thoughts were to FL Resize for the first firing and then just neck size it bumping the shoulder just a hair for all subsequent firings. I figure I'll probably only own one Mosin so it shouldn't be an issue. (plus I mark my reloadings when they are rifle specific)

Dave

I saw the same thing and bought 100 Prvi Partizan loaded rounds. Good brass so far with no problems after a couple of loadings. I like that the primer pockets in it are nice and deep, the primer gets seated generously below the level of the rimmed base.
