7.62x54R Hunting loads?

I have never hunted with 7.62x54r, however I'm hoping to shoot some sort of critter with that rifle at some point, and I've got 204 grain soft points on hand for when that time comes.

Only handloading I've done for the 7.62X54 is when a friend got a very doggy Nagant with corroded bore that we were afraid to use ull power ammo in.
I had a couple hundred empty primed Chinese cases I'd broken down for the bullets and powder for reloading .303 British (very accurate loadings perhaps due the the slightly oversize .3125 bullet).
We used Winchester 760 Powder and a medium light load of about 45 grains and 150 grain Hornady .312 bullets.
Supprizingly the old sewerpipe shot these rounds with astounding accuracy.
The same powder charge was used with some old 170 grain 30/30 bullets (.307-.308?) pulled from a box of corroded hunting ammo he'd found at the range. No signs of excess pressure, shot well.

Do you think anyone has killed elk or moose with a 30/06? Of course! Well, the 7.62X54R is as close to a ballistic twin as you can get...

i havent drawn an elk tag but if i did i wouldnt hesitate to use my m44 on one its close to a 30-06 and that will kill just about anything with a 180gr bullet

You know, over at surplusrifles.com they had some hunting stories up about game being taken with milsurps in general and the MN in particular. Like everyone has said, there is absolutely no reason you couldn't. Plenty of bears and wolves and what not have been whacked in the former Soviet Union with the 7.62x54, and I want to say that you can order hunting loads from Graf and Sons. I actually was contemplating taking my MN after deer, but I didn't draw a tag this year...
