Just about finished sportarizing or Bubbarizing my mosin 91/30, I think I did a fine job with it. Giong for a 1000 yard shooter.
now want to load up some test rounds, the load data i have found 90% is for .308 dia bullet I have 308 310 311 and 312 I would like to use the 311 untill I have the barrel slugged, should I just lighten the .308 load data and use the 311 bullet.
I am all about learning from other reloaders that have been down the road I'm headed.
Thanx

You'll need to acclimate yourself at 100yds to start, as you work up your loads. You're wasting your time with .308 bullets, so move to the .310 and .311 loads to see if it has a preference for any particular size. Start on the low side first with any of the listed powders.
Do you have a selection of powders to try already?

Yeah thats what I was thinking I do have a boat load of powders thinking 311 bullet 150gr-ish with BL-C-2. I am going to start at 100 yards then move up 100 yards at a time.
My long term goal here is to use the info I have weight speed and distance use my balistic table and be on target, up to now it's been plinking at 100 yds or less we always have fun now I want to
get into long range hunting.

I recommend using a magnum primer with BLC2, if you have them, they might give you more consistent ignition with the harder to ignite ball powder. Probably a good choice of powder anyway, just work up from below the maximum.

My M-38 (Russian) loves Sierra 150 grain .308 Match King's. I don't know what the difference in a few thousands would make. I slugged the barrel years ago and came up with .312 and .314 for lands and grooves. Is .003" going to make much difference?

BTW It holds a 1.5" group at 100 yards on sandbags. Close enough for anything I shoot at.

"Is .003" going to make much difference?"

IMHO, yes, using bullets that are smaller diameter than the barrel is not a recipe for maximizing the accuracy potential of any firearm.

It would be simple enough to find out? Just buy or mooch a sample pack of bullets of a diameter to match your rifle and load 'em up.

You're going to have a hard time making a 1000 yard gun out of a rifle that probably can't do better than 2-3 inches at 100 yards.
