7 mag & 30-06

Is there any great advantage with the flatter shooting 7 mag. I have several 30-06 rifles and saw a 7 mag that I thought was interesting. I'm going for deer, elk & boar. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't think so unless you are shooting the deer, elk & boar beyond 300 yards on a regular basis.

If you're under 500yds, you will probably be better off with the 30-06, but in all it really comes down to personal preference.

Here in Colorado, both are used extensively for deer and elk. The 7mm probably has a slight edge in popularity. Either will certainly get the job done at reasonable ranges, if you do your part. More important than either of these two caliber choices is the bullet you use. If you are after elk, consider using a premium bullet like a Nosler Partition, Barnes TSX, etc. Good luck.

If you want to hunt Elk or larger game the 7 mag is the way to go. Not because it is flatter shooting, I don't shoot at game past 200 yards, but because you can drive a heavy bullet at velocities that allow adequate penetration at less than optimum angles.

TexasEd, do you really have to justify purchasing another rifle? If you want it and can afford it, then get it.
The 7MM mag is a wonderful, flat shooting round, but the '06 is no slouch either.
It can only enhance your arsenal.
