Has anyone had any problems with Remington 700 magazines? I am thinking of getting the SPS with Detachable mag because I really like the idea of pre-loading, and snap and shoot. My Savage 99 is mag fed and it has always worked flawlessly, but I am wondering if the 700 has had any problems. If so, can you please state what the issue(s) was. Thanks!!!

Police Sniper rifles

I would not recomend this rifles with the detachable magazine. We have found the magazines not reliable.

If you search the archives at www.thefiringline.com (which go back a lot further than those here) you'll find quite a few complaints about Remington 700 DM rifles. Having said that, I have a 700LTR DM that has never had any kind of hiccup or misstep ***except*** where I failed to fully latch the magazine. I don't think DM adds much as a design concept, in real life...I leave the magazine in and load from the top as if it were the standard ADL or BDL magazine and never have any problems, user-induced or otherwise.

Another issue - I don't remember whether the inside dimensions on the DM magazine are the same as the ADL/BDL rifles. If forced to guess, I'd guess the DM rifles are probably shorter and will have trouble feeding some longer cartridges that the ADL/BDL rifles will handle fine. However, that's a WAG.

I cannot attest to the "reliability" of the magazines in the model 700. I personally have fired less than 300 shots thru my 700 stainless DM with factory muzzle break:neener: in 7mm STW. I do know for a fact that the longest mag I found would NOT work the ultra mag calibers. That said, the mag seems to be a decent internal design, but the mag release tabs are totally in the WRONG place. I lost a mag hog hunting in the canyons around Lookeba,OK . The grip position I use when carrying in the thick seems to place my hand on the mag release tabs. I still like this feature, just like I enjoy it on my 788's.

700 magazine problems?

700??!

In that case, I would recommend not trying to fix said magazine, but instead buying a new one.
