7mm-08, .308, or .270?

I could care less about whether a cartridge is long action or short action. Of the three choices even 7mm-08 ammunition is not hard to find.

My pick of the three would be .270 simply because I’ve had one for over 45 years and like it. Second would be 7mm-08 and I’d probably have one if I didn’t have a 6.5x55. I have an exceptional amount of dislike for the .308 with no valid reason. Just give me a 30-06.

At the ranges I shoot deer(350 yards or less) it doesn’t matter which of the three cartridges you choose, they all perform the same on deer.

I have all three of those in the M70 actions and would give up the 270 before the other two. This is simply because I do like the short action over the long action. I also have a couple of M70's in 30-06 and would part with the 270 before getting rid of them. And don't take me wrong...there's nothing wrong with the 270, but it does seem to be easier to scope the short actions with modern scopes than the long actions. You really couldn't go wrong with any of the three that were presented.

I've owned all three, and I also reload. For deer hunting, neither has a significant advantage over the others. I prefer short actions and like to have heavier bullet options, which puts the 270 at the bottom of my list ( of those three). But that's just me.

My shots are going to be close. None more than 200 or 250 yards. Most between 25 and 75 yards. I prefer 308 to keep the velocity down but bullet size up. If I was shooting at 200+ yards regularly I'd choose a speedy 270.

Which is a very good point.

It's not "speed" - but the right speed, especially for cup-n-core hunting bullets.
