Recently came into a Winchester model 770 that has been re-barreled for 7mm super, which is stamped on the barrel. The ex-owner tells me the ammo must be hand loaded and cannot be bought from the factory. We will hand load the ammunition but wanted to find out if anybody had any information to add. Any little bit helps.

Its time for a chamber cast unless the dies come with the rifle. Back in the 50's and 60's there were lots of specialty cartridges formed and chambered by gunsmiths all over the country. A look into P.O. Ackley's books can be an eye opening experience in this vain. I would bet there is more than one "7MM Super" from that time period.

The only thing close I can think of or look up is the 7mm Mashburn Super Magnum. Might be somebody's copy who didn't want to give credit to Mr Mashburn. But it will take a chamber cast to be sure.

I am just astounded by people's willingness to buy stuff they don't understand.

I think you might very well be money ahead to just have it reballeled to a standard caliber.

Or, if there is enough barrel thickness over the chamber area, set back and rechambered to 7mm Mag or whatever.

Regardless of what it is, it seems very unlikely you can buy off-the-shelf reloading dies for it.

And custom dies will run you right around 2 bills at least.

What caliber you can rebarrel it to will be pretty much decided by the previous calibers case head dimensions. Do you know if the current caliber is a belted cartridge or not?

Thanks for all the feed back. In my defense, the rifle was given to me by a distant family member as a gift. I would never purchase a rifle chambered/ barreled in a caliber that I have no idea of what it is. I am unsure about the Belted cartridge thing. I will be sure to get some more answers from the previous owner. Thanks again.

There's also the 7x61 Super which originally was the 7x61 Sharpe & Hart. We've had some threads on it lately.

ironhorse43, with the lack of information specific to this rifle, a competent gunsmith can make it back into a current factory round as rcmodel suggested. You'll be much happier with your gift if you don't have to rely on someone else providing your ammunition. From your first post, he is apparently not sure about loading it either. You don't need those issues. Good luck.

hornady reload, 7mm Super (Sharp & Hart)

I have a danish shultz and larsen rifle that shoots 7 x 61 sharpe and hart, m60 and m65 version were chambered in this, and i have norma ammo boxes, some named 7x 61 and some 7 x 61 super. not sure what the diff is but rifle fires both well. Hornady has reload info in its reload manual,as does sierra. the cartridge was a predecessor to the rem mag and and has velocities up to 3200 fps, 2900 on a 162 grain bullet.
