Does anyone have experience with the 7x57 AI? I just picked up a Steyr Austria Modelo 1912 Columbian mauser with a 22in barrel. I have some hornady 162 ELD-X and imr4350 or 4064. Can anyone suggest a good load to start with?

Welcome to THR you can just use book 7x57 mauser max loads. The ai holds a good 2 grains more powder. Imr4350 works very well in the 7x57ai And pictures would be appreciated any makers name on the rifle?

My hornady book shows 44.0 max imr4350 and the 162Amax.
I normally like using 140s mostly the Sierra pro hunter good bullet, with 52.0 imr4350 which I believe is another members load as well.

I have some 168 noslor accubond long range bullets I have to try out. Lucky have plenty of room in my 09 Argentine.

I shot 140 gr. Nosler partitions in mine. The load was 52.0 gr IMR 4350 with a CCI large rifle primer (same as Troy's). This is NOT a starting load.
You ever try and heavier bullets in your ai. I have them 168s I'd like to try, there really long but can still have the base where the shoulder starts.
The 140s in 7mms work so good tho.

btw the dies are working great, still have to get out to shoot but had a few cases that needed the shoulder pushed back some.

My throat was short so long bullets had to be set back too far to suit me. The heaviest I ever shot in mine were 150 gr.

This is the rifle. No makers marks that I have found. I have the "Handbook shooters and Reloaders by P.O. Ackley" and it shows a max load for 160gr and 4350 at 55gr., but i am getting alot of conflicting info as to what to start with.

The Ackley dada is very outdated, you can't get that much powder in the case, even 52 is just in the neck.

The great Mr. P.O. Ackley lived in the "speed at any cost" era. Everyone was chasing 4000 f/s and more. They pushed their loads beyond safe limits at times.
Also remember that "speed kills" .... barrels, that is. You will eat out your barrel faster with inordinately hot loads.
