Dear Sirs,
I have been a long time stalker of these forums and impressed by the collective knowledge available here. However, I live in the U.K. and although I have a very healthy interest in ballistics, I’ve never owned a gun and often felt unworthy of joining. Recently however I have been plagued by a question that I am unable to find an answer to and felt obliged to sign up and ask the collective for assistance since I feel I am missing some basic knowledge that is preventing me from resolving this conundrum.
So for no real reason I have developed an interest in the concept of subsonic sniper rifles. Ridiculous concept other than in the field of specialist HRTs or Law Enforcement Snipers engaging targets at shorter distances.
Nonetheless my research led me to the 8.6 Creedmoor cartridge (based on a modified 6.5 Creedmoor case) and then the older .338 Whisper #1 cartridge based upon the 7mm BR case.
So here is my problem. Based upon my research it appears that both calibres are based upon an AR-10 platform with a .308 bolt face and a .338 barrel conversion with both cartridges fitting into unmodified .308 magazines.
So does this mean that if I built an AR-10 with the .308 bolt and a .338 barrel that I could fire BOTH 8.6 Creedmoor and .338 Whisper #1? I know that some firearms like the .357 magnum revolver can fire both .357 magnum and .38 Special rounds but I have some doubts that in a semi-loader platform, cartridges based upon different parent cases can fire from the same chamber.
What am I missing?
